William David Green Jr a 2 year old white man attempted to cut his chest with a razor in the men s room at the bus terminal yesterday morning He had just arrived from New York and asked the next bus to New York He reportedly said I ve been here 20 minutes and that s too damn long He was taken to Roanoke Rapids Hospital and reportedly made a second attempt to cut himself on the way His history includes former residence in Roanoke City a marriage and recent loss of his wife His father is believed to work at Roanoke Mill No 2.

Halifax TB x-ray survey reaches 18300 in two months
Halifax County citizens continue free chest x-rays in mobile buses. By January 17, 18300 people had been scanned in December and January. Final bus dates include Litton Roanoke Rapids Wel ton and Halifax with county home inmates and prison camp inmates scheduled for January 27 and 28 respectively. Dr Robert F Young urges remaining residents to get x-rayed before the program ends.

President seeks $4 million for Buggs Island project

Major Dean Is Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel
Major William G. Dean has been promoted to lieutenant colonel. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Dean of 401 Jackson Street and a West Point graduate from the class of 1939. Dean saw combat in Germany, earned the Bronze Star, and later returned to the U.S. for medical treatment at Tilton General Hospital before resuming duty and eventually taking terminal leave.

FBI Arrest Lyons in New York After Fatal Collision
James Lyons a Negro man involved in a truck automobile crash near Tillery last September which killed Christine House and Andrew Branch was arrested in New York City by FBI agents. He allegedly drove a truck owned by Mrs Taylor of Norfolk without permission before fleeing to New York. Lyons, accompanied by John House, was held in Halifax County jail awaiting full investigation.

Dimes March Tag Day Set For Jan. 25 in Roanoke Rapids
Roanoke Rapids announces a March of Dimes tag day for Saturday January 25. High school girls will solicit ten cents donations on the streets while women run collection booths in theatre foyers. The 1946 county polio fund spent 2079.70 for five local cases and a Duke Hospital patient may incur costs from 100 to 3000 dollars. The event is led by the Roanoke Rapids Lions Club.

Medlin Will and Bonds Found After Three Weeks
A will belonging to BE Medlin and $2,800 in bonds were found in an old pocketbook washed from a water drain at 12th and Jefferson by Mrs. L. F. White. The bonds include two $1000, one $500 and three $100 denomination notes. The will is with the Superior Court clerk as an investigation into the disappearance continues.
