Halifax X ray survey ends Feb 5 with 20981 examined

A tuberculosis X ray survey in Halifax County began December 12 and will finish February 5. Citizens who received letters must return them for further examination before the deadline. The count through January 25 shows 20 981 citizens X rayed. After completion, technicians move to Wake County for a county wide survey. A full analysis will follow.

Walter Howell and brother Henry found guilty in Massey slaying

A Halifax County Superior Court jury found Walter Frances Howell guilty of second degree murder in the November slaying of Roanoke Rapids Policeman Clifton Massey and sentenced him to 30 years. His brother Henry Lee Howell pleaded guilty to being an accessory before the fact and received a sentence of 15 to 20 years.

Fire Destroys Meat and House Destroys Meat and House

Fire department responded at 9 50 am to the residence of J H Pair in Belmont outside city limits. Flames consumed a smoke house and about 600 pounds of meat being smoked. damage estimated at $900 with no insurance. Firefighters saved the residence.

Franklin Shot. Abernathy Jailed in Halifax County

Bennie Abernaty, 15, of Halifax County, charged with shooting E. D. Franklin on January 21. Abernaty used a pistol and faces trial February 11 in Halifax Recorder’s Court. He reportedly held a $200 peace bond for prior trouble.

Review of Massey Killing at Roanoke Rapids Parlor

Preliminary hearing details the fatal shooting of Roanoke Rapids officer Clifton Massey by brothers Walter and Henry Howell in the Rosemary Billiard Parlor. The suspects wrestled Massey’s gun, Henry retrieved it, Walter fired through the glass, killing Massey. The brothers fled, were captured near Littleton, and await further proceedings.

Walter Howell’s Stoicism Fails in Court Verdict

Walter Howell’s stoicism collapsed after the jury found him guilty of second degree murder. His face twitched and eyes watered as the foreman noted the verdict, then his brother Henry appeared excited before Henry was sentenced.

Solicitor Ernest Tyler and assistants presented witnesses Tuesday in the state case against Walter and Walter Howell. Testimony included J T Warren Atlas Edwards John Dixon Dr F G Kronche J A Wood and O C Beaty with lawmen Chief J T Davis Sheriff Crawley and others. Defense offered no evidence and urged the jury to return a lesser verdict as the men reportedly had several beers that day.
