Pvt Rodney R Powell 28 son of Mr and Mrs R A Powell of 732 Monroe St is reported missing in action in the Luxembourg area on December 20. He joined the Army in 1942 and went overseas in 1943. He attended Roanoke Rapids schools. His brother Robert is in the Medical Corps overseas.

Roanoke Rapids Elementary Stamps Drive Surpasses Goal
Elementary schools in Roanoke Rapids raised 28 545 40 for defense stamps and bonds, exceeding the 18 000 goal. Funds funded an Army Primary Trainer Plane unit costing 15 000 and a 3 000 Liaison Plane, each with markers. Rosemary School bought an 8 275 amphibian Duck truck with a marker bearing its name.

Missing in Action Roger Rogers Reported in Exonean War
Pfc Robert A Rogers son of Mr and Mrs Rufus A Rogers of near Aurelian Springs is reported missing in action in the Exonean theater since December 25 1944. He recently told his wife and parents he landed safely in England after being overseas since last fall. Rogers a 1940 Aurelian Springs High School graduate attended High Point College and worked five years as assistant manager of Halifax Farmers Supply Company. Inducted December 1942 he was overseas last fall. His wife Lula Belle McAllister 661 Williams Street notified of the missing report.

Brothers Meet Christmas Day After Five Long Years
Roanoke Rapids residents shared a Christmas reunion tale. Chief Petty Officer William Edgar Wilkinson, nine years in the Navy, and bandmaster at the U S Navy School of Music in Washington, was reported somewhere in the Pacific. Meanwhile Liles brothers Captain Jesse Stewart Liles and Private Frederick K. Liles, sons of BE W Liles, joined relatives in Honolulu after five years apart. Earl Gibson and his wife welcomed Earl’s brother Lester, both stationed in Honolulu, creating a large holiday gathering. Another Liles son, Chas C Liles, USN, was later found to be in Honolulu, with Pfc Amon Liles serving in Belgium.

L. R. White, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. R. White, has been discharged from the army after serving since December 1948. He is married to Mozelle Game of Clayton and the couple has three children.

Pvt. Eugene Basil Glover, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. B. Glover of 107 Jackson Street, was reported missing in action since December 17 after serving since June 1942. Red Cross to Start New Nurse Aide Class in Roanoke Rapids
The Roanoke Rapids Chapter of the American Red Cross will start a new Nurse Aide class around February first. Mrs Johnny Bounds will teach, with appointment papers sent to the National Red Cross. About eighty graduates exist from previous classes, two on Army hospital duty, and many others in need as nurses Aides.
