A 30 member Red Cross Nurse Aide course will begin about February 1 at the Nurses Home in Roanoke Rapids. Applicants must be 18 or older with high school level education and pass physicals. The program aims to increase local nursing support as many trained aides have moved or joined armed forces.
Mothers of all pupils at Central School urged to attend a planning meeting for the annual Valentine party. The meeting aims for high social and financial success, with 100 percent cooperation. It will be held at Central School on Wednesday afternoon January 31 at 4 oclock.
Francis Hockaday, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. O. Hockaday, earned the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action in France on November 14. He joined the army March 17, trained at Camp Walter, Texas, and went overseas in October.
The President's Ball will be held Saturday night in the Armory with plans for a big event. Proceeds will go toward the fight on infantile paralysis and the public is invited to attend.
Mrs. J. J. Jenkins, wife of Pfc. Johnnie J. Jenkins, recently received the Bronze Star awarded for heroic service in military operations against the enemy in France on November 6. Jenkins has been overseas since August and was part of a ten man patrol led by an officer, reflecting credit on his character and soldierly qualities.
Two Roanoke area families learn their loved ones are missing in action. Mrs A F Feon of 907 Vance street Roanoke reports her husband Staff Sergeant Andrew F Ferguson missing in Belgium since December 22. Ferguson, 31, son of Mr and Mrs P M Ferguson of Emporia Virginia, enlisted March 1942 and has been overseas since June last year with the Seventh Armored Division. He worked at Roanoke Mills No 2 before service. his wife is former Gracie Jenkins. Also Pvt William B Holmes, 28, of 1004 Vance Street Roanoke Rapids, listed missing in action December 18 in the Luxembourg area. Holmes’s mother Mrs Annie G Holmes has another son, Sgt Clarence Is Holmes, in the medical corps overseas.
Applications for enlistment are being received for the 14th Company NC State Guard in Roanoke Rapids. Captain F S Kemp directs new members to apply. next drill is set for Wednesday January 31 with an Army instructor present. No drill next Monday night.
Mrs. Lile M. Smith was notified by the War Department that her son Pfc. Willie L. Smith, 28, was wounded in action somewhere in Germany. He is a three year service veteran with about one year overseas. Before the army he farmed locally.
Private Bernard B. Dixon son of Mr and Mrs J C Dixon of Enfield was reported by the War Department as seriously wounded in action in Belgium on January 2. A 1944 enlistee and Enfield High School graduate, he went overseas in September. His wife is former Bertha Vester of Castalia, NC, and a sister Mrs Louise Hardee lives in Roanoke Rapids.
A Liberty Ship launched at Brunswick Georgia on January 12 is named the SS Wilson after Harold O. Wilson of the S S Flora Macdonald crew. He died when his ship was torpedoed in May 1943. Wilson was from Wilmington. His sister Mrs Vernell Ganious attended the launch in Wilmington. another sister Mrs K F Skipper lives on Bolling Road, Roanoke Rapids.
J AC Leggett 807/c son of Mrs J H Leggett and the late J H Leggett spends a few days with wife Annie Draper and relatives. Entered service in 1941 and returned after 27 months overseas. Fought in Guadalcanal New Guinea and New Georgia. He plans to leave Wednesday for Fort Pierce Florida with his wife.
Pvt. Clarence I. Medlin, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Medlin of 128 Jefferson Street, Roanoke, has arrived in Southern France after leaving Camp Billa near Medlin. The note places the event on May 25, 1946.
