Roanoke Rapids twins Marvin and Marion Taylor, 23, sons of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Taylor, fought together in Germany. Marion served since Normandy, Marvin joined in October 1944. They found each other amid mud and battle while with the First Army’s First Division.

Butler Breaks His Right Arm
Dan Butler fell last Wednesday leaving the main Roanoke Mills Company office on Jackson Street and broke his right arm in about four places. He was taken to Roanoke Rapids Hospital where he remains a patient.

Roanoke Rapids Soldier Wounded in Europe Arrives in Memphis
Sergeant James Reaves of Roanoke Rapids arrived at Kennedy General Hospital in Memphis Tennessee on December 27 to recover from combat wounds received in Normandy and Luxembourg. He served seven months overseas in France England Luxembourg and Normandy and described being pinned down under artillery fire and wounded by machine gun fire.

Garanflo Chooses Runway Sites for Halifax County Airport
G E Garanflo of Charlotte representing the CAA visited Roanoke Rapids to inspect the proposed Halifax County Airport site. He tentatively selected three runways, each about 3,000 feet, with exact locations to be finalized after a topographical map study by Phillip D. Freeman. A land survey by the Airport Committee is complete and, once the runways are fixed, options will be exercised and construction may start. Financing will come from Halifax County citizens with federal aid.

Soldier Stephenson Killed Over Germany October 7
Sgt. Harold L. Stephenson 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Stephenson of Halifax, was killed in action over Germany. A B-17 top turret gunner, he served with the Eighth Air Force since August 1943, entering service August 12, 1943. He attended Weldon High School and worked for Stedman & Co. in Halifax. Surviving are his parents, three brothers Whit Sr. and Lonnie of the home, John of Maribel, four sisters Lucile, Mrs. H. M. Nethery, Mrs. William Mays, and Mrs. Jack Hadford.

Mrs. Nessie Bailey of 1023 Henry Street received a War Department telegram confirming her son Pfc Roland C Bailey is back on duty after being listed lost in action again. The message states he returned to duty on November 22.

Visiting Sgt Wilson Relates War Service Record
Staff Sergeant James M. Wilson, son of Mr and Mrs T O Wilson of this city, is at home for 21 days. He entered the Air Corps in 1942 and went overseas in June last year with the 15th Air Force in Italy. He took part in the Southern France invasion in August and has missions over Germany and other European areas. He has several ribbons and medals and met his sister Lieut Virginia Wilson and brother Lieut C R Wilson in Italy. Another sister Pvt Elizabeth Wilson is in France and brother Seaman 1/c R R Wilson is in the Mediterranean. After leave he will report to Miami Beach for orders.
