Mrs. Jones Dies At Daughter's Home

Mrs. Jones aged 78 died suddenly yesterday at her daughter Mrs. James Woodruff in Northampton County. Funeral services were held at Shiloh Church this afternoon. She was survived by relatives including brothers John Matthews Sr and others, son Ed Jones of Weldon, grandson Fenton Jones, and sisters Mrs J H Kee Mrs Virginia Jordan Mrs Sallie Edwards and Miss Martha Matthews along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Two men held over on assault charges in Roanoke Rapids case

Willie Taylor and W H Alligood bound over to Superior Court after probable cause found at separate preliminary hearings. Miss Ales Pearson, 17, testified that she was assaulted on November 11 near Roanoke Rapids while visiting relatives in Hornertown. Prosecution led by E L Travis. others remanded include Sarah Taylor Harris and Glenn Melwood as accessory.

Privies Project Delayed in Roanoke Rapids Township

T. B. Turner, Julian Glover, Bob Elmore, and Mitchell Shearin have CWA jobs for sanitary work in Roanoke Rapids Township for three months but progress is paused. Carpenters refused the same hourly rate as unskilled labor, stalling local hiring. Turner will supervise privy and septic tank erection, Glover acts as project inspector, Elmore serves as foreman carpenter, and Shearin is assigned to the crew.

FEDERAL JOB FOR J F WELCH APPOINTED DEPUTY COLLECTOR

J F Welch of this city has been appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue by the U S Treasury Department and sworn in at Raleigh Tuesday morning. He will work from Rocky Mount headquarters and cover several counties in this section collecting processing tax and other federal taxes. Welch has been a Roanoke Rapids resident for 21 years.

Kerr in Farmers Speaking at Aurelian Springs

More than 150 farmers in Aurelian Springs heard Congressman John H. Kerr of Warrenton speak at the high school about federal actions affecting farmers in recent months. Kerr, an expert on cotton, tobacco and peanuts, discussed efforts to include peanuts in processing tax and related congressional outcomes.

The Circulating Library of the Woman's Club is now open to members. Membership costs 1.00 per year or 0.25 for three months. A special group of new books is available at 1 cent per day while rules and regulations have been drawn up.

CWA Worker Grievances Roil Halifax County

Tensions rise in Halifax County as Civil Works Administration projects draw political complaints over worker selection. A crew of carpenters refused to work at the 45 cent minimum for unskilled labor, amid wage disputes and concerns about favoritism. Officials J B Hall and Newton Shepard traveled to Raleigh for talks with State CWA administrator Mrs Tom O Berry to resolve the issue under Central Zone rules.

Rooming House Fire on Avenue and 8th Street

Fire started in a second floor linen closet of Mrs B J Dunning s rooming house near Avenue and 8th Street early Wednesday. minor damage to the house and contents of the closet destroyed. About a dozen roomers found lodging with neighbors after smoke was detected at around 1 am. Fire department quickly controlled the blaze with extinguishers and minimal water.
