The city will build 10 miles of sidewalks in Roanoke Rapids with about $50,000 and 175 to 200 workers. State CWA approves the plan, led by County CWA Administrator J. B. Hall with the city board Mayor Jenkins and Kiwanis public affairs committee backing the effort. Details to follow next week.
The Woman's Club Library opens Tue and Fri 2 30 to 5 30 for visitor info and membership. Red Cross seeks Sammie B Hopkins to sign an affidavit about a World War II shell hole incident with Laurence J Oswald, last known on Roanoke Ave. Lamar Stringfield to headline a Weldon High School concert with three musicians next Wed Jan 17 at 8 pm, small admission. Ella Lee Taylor and Mrs Tom Kirby gain CWA employment in Halifax offices. Graham Poyner resigns High School post to promote WPTF Raleigh programs.
Investigation by Herald clarifies how the CWA toilet project superintendent for Halifax County was chosen. State Board of Health officials reviewed county estimates with Dr. Mitchell, County Health Officer, and sought a qualified contractor or foreman to manage the large labor force, but none was named.
At a Monday meeting the Woman's Club Art Department formed plans and committees for an exhibit to be held January 23 from 8 to 6 at the Club Building. The event welcomes drawings etchings paintings or crayons by any community member for display.
J. T. Chase, president of Roanoke Rapids Hospital, reports a dramatic turnaround from debt and near closure to a year of progress. He notes 10,000 of 13,000 in operating debts paid, current bills settled, and multiple improvements funded, signaling financial recovery and renewed services.
Officials announce a state level probe into CWA practices amid reports of favoritism and politics. Mrs. Thomas O Berry and Senator Capus Waynick discussed plans for a machinery to investigate complaints across counties and at foreman and superintendent levels. A formal announcement on the machinery is expected.
Congressman John H. Kerr supports the CWA landing field for Roanoke Rapids and has written to R. B. Page in charge of that branch. An application for the project has been submitted to Mr Page, with the matter handled through Public Affairs.
