Two More Youths in Service

Escaped Prison Farm inmates flee. two still at large

Seventeen prisoners escaped from the State Highway Commission Prison Farm in Jackson shortly after midnight on Wednesday August 12. All but two were captured. Lloyd Bennett of Atchison Kansas and Delma Stanley of Asheville remain at large as the manhunt widens to other states. Four prisoners were captured Thursday afternoon in Branchville Virginia after seeking refuge in a vacant house. They had stolen a shotgun from guards during the escape but surrendered without firing. Two more were captured Thursday between Vaughan and Raleigh.

Brothers in Foreign Service in Hawaii and Northern Ireland

James Cooper serves in Hawaii after enlisting in September 1940. Thos A Cooper Jr entered the Army in October 1941 and is stationed in Northern Ireland. They are sons of Mr and Mrs T A Cooper of near Weldon.

Air raid drill shows C D C response and traffic breaches

A Wednesday air raid drill sounded at 6 30 PM and cleared at 7 15 PM. The Citizens Defense Corps operated smoothly, dispatching units to every incident, with two offenders jailed for ignoring police directions. Reports included a bomb damaging the power plant and canal, fires in the Rosemary section, and a bomb wrecking the downtown ABC store. Continued on page 12.

Compulsory Gas Rationing Stickers Ordered Display

H B Speight of the Halifax County Rationing Board announced motorists must prominently display their gasoline rationing stickers on windshields or rear glass. Station operators will be instructed not to deliver fuel unless the sticker aligns with the rationing book.

Vaughan of Enfield Dies After Station Altercation

Robert W. Vaughan, 45, Enfield Ford dealer and service station owner, died at a Rocky Mount hospital after injuries from a noon fight with former Enfield night policeman Harry Hardison. Hardison surrendered and is jailed in Halifax County. Vaughan had served as a town commissioner. Hardison was suspended from police service about 18 months ago.

Roanoke Rapids Romances Eye State Softball Final

Roanoke Rapids hopes to host the state softball tournament if the Romances beat Pilot Mills in Raleigh Saturday night. The finals were postponed repeatedly due to rain, with Roanoke Rapids and Pilot Mills advancing toward Greensboro against the Western champion.
