Dr. L H Justis of Littleton brought a slander suit against T W Mullen chairman of Halifax County Draft Board No 1 for 25000 dollars. Captain McCommons Lost At Sea North Of Iceland
Roanoke readers learn Captain Robert H. McCommons of the U S Merchant Marine was lost at sea on July 5th as his convoyed ship sank north of Iceland. His wife in Philadelphia received Navy confirmation and reports from rescued crew. The Captain reportedly died after a wave swept him from deck just before lifeboat departure.

The Roanoke Rapids Civilian Defense Council schedules a test air raid for Wednesday evening August 19 from 5 90 to 8 00 P M lasting about one hour. A new procedure directs Air Raid Wardens to report incidents directly to the Control Center by runner or telephone, skipping intermediate reporting to Sector Wardens to save time.

State Highway Prison Camp Break Nets 17 Escapees
Seventeen white male prisoners escaped from the State Highway Commission Prison Camp near Jackson this morning. Sixteen remain at large as guards, patrolmen, and deputies wage an intensive manhunt. The break followed inmates in one cell block sawing bars and overpowering guard J. L. Daughtry and fellow guard R. F. Ricks while a camp cook was bound and gagged. The three were locked in the sick room as the escape unfolded.

TRY MEN WHO ATTEMPTED TO ESCAPE JAIL
Thirteen Negroes and one white man were tried in Recorders Court Tuesday for an attempted jail escape from Halifax County Jail. Judge Daniel presided. Sentences ranged from 6 to 12 months with several men on the road and others suspended on payment of fines and a two year no-crime condition. Continuous readout notes multiple defendants and terms.
