The Sixth Annual Mid-Summer Festival at Roanoke Avenue showgrounds runs through two more nights with a grand cash prize to be awarded Saturday. The W C Kaus Shows attract the largest outdoor display in the city as softball state tournament crowds are expected to swell attendance. Club members, led by Clayton Gurley, credit local support and co operation from other civic groups for the event despite some shortages from members serving in the armed forces.
Harry Hardison former Enfield night policeman must face a first degree murder charge at the next Superior Court term after the death of Enfield automobile dealer Robert W. Baugham. Baugham died in Rocky Mount hospital two hours after an assault at his Enfield business. Hardison surrendered and is held without bond. The court denied a writ of habeas corpus and remanded him to jail.
A Roanoke Rapids man will report to Norfolk for Navy duty. The action is noted in the Monday edition, page 12, section A.
A contestant in New York last week won a prize on a quiz program. The event drew attention for the surprise victory and the program’s format.
The state softball championship arrives at Ledgerwood Park Roanoke Rapids with Roanoke Rapids Romances defending their Eastern title against Burtner Furniture of Greensboro on Friday 8 30 pm. The winner faces the South Carolina champ for district honors while Georgia and Florida withdraw due to travel issues. Admission costs 40 cents for adults and 25 cents for children.
