Roanoke Rapids banks and grocers, members of the Merchants Association, will keep summer Wednesday afternoon closing hours year round with an exception for the ten days before Christmas. Regular store hours resume September 1, with some merchants deferring any year round noon close if others in the trade do.
Pfc James L Weeks son of Mr and Mrs Russell Weeks Halifax achieved the top 30 cal rifle score at Fort Logan Col surpassing the expert mark of 179 with a high score of the air administration school had not had an expert rifleman until his achievement Weeks recently moved from Fort Logan Denver Col to a camp in Augusta Ga awaiting orders and is a member of the air ground crew He entered the army in March while attending State College at his call.
The 1943 state softball tournament opens at Memorial Stadium Greensboro with 14 teams. Roanoke Rapids Romances, four-time defending champs, are favored to win. High Point faces Gastonia in the opening game while Roanoke Rapids plays Asheville at 9. If they win, they meet the Char winner next.
Shown here are Mallory E. Faison Jr. and Howard E. Faison, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Mallory E. Faison, living about three miles from the city. Mallory Jr., 22, earned his commission as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 29 at Strauther Field Kansas after serving as a sergeant in the original local National Guard company. He trained as an officer in Oklahoma. Howard, 20, is a private in the Army, a flight mechanic in the Air Corps, stationed in India. He volunteered October 9, 1942, and trained at Gulfport Mississippi, with three months at LaGuardia Field, New York.
The August term of the Superior Court at Halifax was adjourned until Monday in respect to Jos P Pippen a veteran Littleton attorney who died last night Judge R Hunt Parker announced all criminal cases for this term are finished and civil cases will be disposed of when the court reconvenes The Johnson murder case involving Raymond Johnson was postponed to the October term due to absent witnesses.
Ameri can Red Cross local chapter announces the work rooms will resume on September 1 after a two month closure for supply delays. Mrs. F. G. Jarman says ample stock exists and thanks volunteers, noting dressings support overseas armed forces.
In a two hour murder trial Mrs. Tiffaney Pinkerton 40 pleaded guilty and received 12 to 15 years in State Prison for fatally shooting Ernest W. Riddle on June 19 on a city street. Riddle a father of three died at Roanoke Rapids Hospital after claiming she acted due to plans to leave her influence.
The Halifax County Board of Education sets Monday August 80 as the general opening day for all county schools and asks teachers to meet principals on Saturday morning August 28. The Roanoke Rapids colored schools open August 30, while white city schools start September 6 as announced.
