City Soldier Killed in Camp Howze Maneuver Accident
Pvt. Jesse Winfield Hasty 22 of Roanoke Rapids died Thursday night at Camp Howze Texas when struck by a truck during blackout duty. Funeral held at Rosemary Methodist Church with Rev Paul Fields. interment Roanoke Rapids Cemetery. Survived by wife Edith, twin sister, grandmother, uncles, stepmother, half brother in armed forces, and other relatives. Inducted December 9 1942. Previously worked at Rosemary Manufacturing and local stores. Continued on Page 8-Sec. A.

A Roanoke Herald staff member and son of Mrs. J. T. Vaughan is serving in North Africa after 18 months in the armed forces, including 12 overseas. He has seen action in Ireland, England, and North Africa and is said to have participated in four major battles. His brother, David E. Vaughan, serves in Los Angeles, California.

Truck Wheel Runs Over Child In North Roanoke Block
A pulpwood truck owned by James R. Johnson struck 5 year old Patricia Ann Dodge as she played near Roanoke Avenue. She was taken to the hospital with serious injuries but no fractures were found. Johnson is held on 1000 cash bond on charges including reckless driving and operating a truck without brakes.

Bill Alligood Named Regional Director of Softball
Bill Alligood appointed regional director of the American Softball Association during a Detroit meeting announced by secretary M. J. Pauley at the Greensboro state tournament. He resigned as coach of the Romances in 1942 to become state softball commissioner, a post held for two years. He will preside over district four covering Florida Georgia North Carolina and South Carolina.

First Bale of Cotton Sold Here in Halifax County
E M Collins of the Littleton highway is credited with selling the first bale of the 1943 crop in Halifax County. Rosemary Manufacturing Co through buyer W S Dean purchased the bale this week and paid the customary five dollar premium for the first bale prize, a streak he has maintained for several years.
