The Herald announces a dot counting contest with fifteen cash and subscription prizes totaling 50 dollars. Entries must be postmarked between April 28 and May 12 1936 and require a one dollar subscription.
The sheriff cited evidence leading to Evans Macklin, 26, being bound over to Superior Court on a murder charge for the shooting of Chief of Police Moore at 3 a.m. Sunday four weeks ago. A new witness and another jail inmate supported probable cause. Macklin denied the charge. The shotgun used remains seized. Macklin had prior arrests including for stealing hams and fighting. He was held without bond.
Doctor Ralph McDonald Democratic candidate for Governor spoke to about 1,000 voters at Roanoke Rapids High School. He praised the Roosevelt administration and attacked the Hoover era tax policy. He urged taxes on ability to pay and criticized sales tax, citing Halifax County and a local 11 million dollar estate. The remarks were led by C G Shell and Bernard Allsbrook with local merchants present.
