Two Crashes Claim Three Lives Near Burton Springs

Three people died in two Saturday crashes near Burton Springs Crossroads. Albert Hughes Jarvis, 5, died at the hospital from severe head injuries after being struck by Mrs. Tom Perkinson’s car at 2:30 p.m. near Clary's Filling Station. Mrs. Delia Barnes, 45, and Claud Shaw, 21, perished at a railroad crossing nearby in a separate accident involving Shaw driving and Barnes riding. The Perkinson vehicle carried Mrs. Atkins, her child, and another visitor. Perkinson suffers a nervous breakdown. Funeral held for Jarvis on Cedar Street with local interment. A. C. Supreme Court Dismisses Kidnapping Charges in Local Case

The North Carolina Supreme Court dropped kidnapping charges against George Smith, Dick Tudor, and Jewell Gray and upheld conspiracy and assault sentences for Smith and Tudor. Smith and Tudor receive six months more each. prior January verdicts from Superior Court had Smith five to eight years, Tudor three to five, Gray 18 months, with added six months for conspiracy and six months for Smith and Tudor’s assault, the latter suspended for Tudor.

Count the dots contest draws Roanoke Rapids readers

The Roanoke Rapids Herald runs a city wide dot counting contest offering cash prizes and county outsiders special weekly prizes. The plate count is sealed and to be opened by judges at noon May 12. Winners will be chosen by the contest manager with books turned over to three local men.

Local candidate for Halifax County Judge announces bid

Dr. Carter of Weldon declares candidacy for the County Recorder's Court seat in Halifax County opposing Charles R. Daniel and T. Emmett Marshall. He was born near Halifax, trained at the U S College of Veterinary Surgeons in Washington in 1918, and has practiced in Weldon for 18 years.

Another candidate in the field for Sheriff is J. L. Bass of Enfield who announced in this paper last week bringing the total aspirants for sheriff to six.
