Men Are Taking Exams For Guard Unit In Roanoke Rapids

Roanoke Rapids has been awarded the North Carolina National Guard unit a collecting company of the 105th Medical Regiment. For two days a committee collected applications double the peace time strength. Regimental officers and local officials conduct physicals. About 120 applicants for 66 places. many fail or are deferred.

Eight Children Hurt as Plaster Falls at Rosemary School

Eight second graders were injured when a plaster section about 5 by 8 feet collapsed from the Rosemary School ceiling on Wednesday morning. Peggy Ryals, four toes broken, and others suffered contusions and cuts. none of the injured remained hospitalized.

Bridge under construction over Roanoke River north arm

The new 256 foot bridge across the northern Roanoke River arm and the adjoining highway between the main river bridge and Gaston is under construction. The first concrete for the bridge will be poured early next week with seven cement pillars planned. The project, contracted to Riker and Yount of Reidsville for the bridge and Gregory and Poole of Virgilina for the highway, aims to remove curves and improve access, with completion in about four months.

Boxing Show Set for May 9 at Simmons Park Roanoke Rapids

The Rosemary Athletic Club promotes Roanoke Rapids outdoor boxing on May 9 at Simmons Park marking the town’s first open air bout in years. Local fighters scheduled to box with proceeds aiding club activities.
