The Third Annual Garden Pilgrimage runs April 15 and 16 with six Roanoke Rapids gardens. Halifax County will welcome visitors April 14 to view historic buildings, due to date changes. Hundreds are expected for the two day tour and full details appear on page 1.
Ten men filed their candidacies with the County Board of Elections. Eleven men announced intentions in county papers, with some not yet filing. Filing this week were Wade H. Dickens for Solicitor of Recorder's Court Irwin Clark for Judge of Recorder's Court B B Everett for lower house T W M Long for State Senate.
A Roanoke Rapids meeting with Adjutant General J Van B Metts and local leaders pressed for a permanent armory and community center as the 50 000 project would require a 15 000 local share. City and county officials had yet to act on funding, while Rocky Mount already had county backing. A servants house and storage building owned by A. A. Duncan burned near Roanoke Junction around 2 am Wednesday, with about 2200 dollars in damages. Firefighters saved nearby homes while pool tables, a trailer, and other items were lost in the blaze, the largest city fire since spring 1987.
County lawmen refuse to reveal Keeter's location after the April 3 shooting of Deputy Sheriff William Pope. Authorities cite public sentiment in Weldon and Halifax as the reason for keeping the prisoner’s whereabouts undisclosed. Officials say details will emerge in about ten days following the dramatic arrest and overnight manhunt.
Tommy Lefty Byrne returns to Roanoke Rapids next Saturday to meet Duke Blue Devils in their first 1940 meeting. Byrne, who shut down opponents for the Owls last summer, faces a Duke squad aiming to extend a near perfect start after a single loss this season.

Dollie Lee Hudson, a Northampton County resident, was sentenced to death for the murder of Hampton W. Elliott last November. The case was tried in Northampton County Superior Court with expert testimony from federal and state investigators. The defendant was convicted after about thirty minutes of jury deliberation and remained on death row after an automatic stay pending his appeal.
