Howard J. King Dies in Roanoke Rapids at 62
Howard J. King 62, longtime Roanoke Rapids resident and former Coburn Shoe Store bookkeeper, died Monday at 3:30 AM after a two week illness. He was a past master of Widows Son Lodge 519 A F and A M and a deacon at First Baptist Church. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3:30 PM from the First Baptist Church. burial in Cedarwood Cemetery with Masonic Lodge in charge. He is survived by his wife Ne Clara Thomason King.

Milton Wick announces Guy M. Leedy as assistant publisher of the Roanoke Rapids Herald. Leedy, a prominent North Carolina newspaperman, previously served as general manager and treasurer of Elizabeth City Advance Inc. The 1948 Roanoke Rapids Jays defeated the Durham Bulls 8 to 4 in an opening game at Simmons Park attended by about 800 fans. Red Rudden homered in the first inning to start the Jays’ scoring, and Leroy Carleton earned the win with three solid innings. John Pavlich collected two of three hits for Roanoke Rapids, while Paul Crawford led Durham with a triple and a single.
