C H Markham Rises From Section Hand to Illinois Central Chairman

The death of C H Markham, longtime chairman of the Illinois Central board, at his Altadena home prompts a Chicago funeral today at Holy Name Cathedral. Born May 22, 1861 in Clarksville Tennessee, he rose from laborer to railroad executive, later directing Gulf refiners before returning to rail service as Illinois Central president and chairman of its subsidiaries.

Stalled Car Fatality at Dolton Crossing

Montes a 20 year old Mexican laborer died when his stalled car was struck by a B O C T train at the Lincoln avenue crossing in Dolton. His companion Modesto Frego escaped with minor injuries. An inquest returned an open verdict. Funeral held at St Marys church.

Death of Guy Pettigrew Ex Soldier in Chicago

Man Found Dead in River Identified as Walter Polus

Frank Stomp saw a dead man in the Calumet River near the C and E I bridge and alerted police. The victim Walter Polus of 9825 Colfax Avenue was a 87 year old switchman for the E J E railroad, last seen after receiving $94 pay on Nov 2. Autopsy concluded homicide and river disposal. Police note face down position of floating corpses.

Mrs J M Deam Suffers Arm Injury In West Pullman

Mrs J M Deam, worthy matron of the Eastern Star Lodge in West Pullman, fell on a slippery sidewalk last Tuesday while on lodge business and broke her right arm. She is laid up for some time and has the sympathy of many friends hoping for a rapid recovery.

The Indian Summer weather lasting until November 25 was displaced by a snow storm and cold weather on Wednesday. Thermometers showed 2 to 3 below in the neighborhood on Thanksgiving morning. Michigan and northern Indiana towns reported 14 to 16 inches of snow, halting auto traffic in many places.
