Gary mayor backs plan to open Little Calumet for barge canal

City officials and engineers from six Illinois and Indiana municipalities surveyed lines and bridges for a proposed straightened Grand Calumet river project from the Indiana Harbor canal to Hegewisch. The plan seeks to deepen watercourses and improve pollution control by diverting more water from the Little Calumet and dredging to the state line for a potential barge canal, with Harvey a strong opponent.

Kinney Grandson Dies After Pneumonia At 14 Months

The Pointer records the death of Thomas Robert Kinney Jr., 14 months old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kinney, who died Thursday night at St. Francis hospital Blue Island after an operation for an inguinal hernia followed by pneumonia. Funeral will be private. parents thank friends for sympathy.

Robbery Suspect Captured After Riverdale Hold Up

Sunday morning Riverdale police nabbed Arthur Breault of Canal and Ashland in Blue Island after a robbery on 184th near Ashland. James Monahan identified him. Breault pled guilty before Judge Baumgartner and was bound over to the grand jury on two thousand five hundred dollars bond. Blue Island police plan charges for forging several checks. Breault remains jailed. A lost wire-haired terrier is offered a reward. Call Riverdale 429.

Large Mallard engine hauls long freight run in Illinois

The C. & E. I. tests a Mallard Compound engine with 16 drivers and 4 cylinders. It hauled 70 loads from Livan Danville to Doilen on its first trip, 125 empty cars on the return. Critics say rail length blocks towns and slows traffic. trains remain impractically long in Illinois. Also noted are local social updates and a livestock sale.

Ford Lake Inaha Opens Calumet River Barge Passage

The Ford barge Lake Inaha delivered 4000 tons of parts from Detroit to Ford's new dock west of Torrence avenue, the first cargo to reach up the Calumet River beyond the Torrence bridge. Captain O A Johnson piloted the barge from Detroit. tug Barrallon towed her. The 570 foot dock, built at a cost near 500000 dollars, features two railroad tracks and a 20 foot roadway for direct barge to rail or truck transfers. Ford views the harbor at Lake Calumet as key to regional industrial growth and future expansion.

Health Clinic Plans and Tuberculosis Testing in Dalton

The regular health clinic will be held Monday at 1 p m in the Dalton village hall. Dr. Novak will conduct a harmless test to detect incipient tuberculosis among children who are contacts. Seventeen attended the last clinic and interest is growing. Plans are underway for a toxin antitoxin clinic for babies and children up to five with local Board of Health support. Helping In Good Cause At Brehn Shoe Store

The Brehn Shoe store in the Dal ton Theatre Building will repair old shoes donated for poor children. Repaired shoes and others brought in will go to school nurse Miss Gooch and Public Health nurse Miss Itter for distribution to needy boys and girls. Nurses will collaborate with PTA groups and Legion Auxiliary as plans form a joint relief association.

New Riverdale School Site Wins Voters Bond Issue

In District 143 centered on Dalton Riverdale South Holland and Dixmoor over a thousand votes favored a new elementary school at 146th and La Salle. Voters approved bond plans and a site purchase despite split opinions on location near Ivanhoe subdivision and existing districts 148 and 133.
