Democrats Sweep County Races In Landslide

The election last Tuesday produced a Republican sweep nationally while Democrats won most county seats in Cook County. John Jaranowski, the lone local candidate for a county post, was defeated by a large margin due to ties with the Crowe Barrett faction. In South Holland precinct Hoover led with 260 to 6 for Smith, and in Riverdale Village Hall precinct vote totals showed strong Hoover support with multiple contests across precincts.

Passes Away of Frank H Claussen Retired Wagonmaker

Frank H. Claussen 72 retired wagonmaker died Wednesday at 106 Lincoln Avenue Dalton after a 16 month illness. Born in Schleswig-Holstein Germany on September 11 1856, he emigrated with family as a child. He married Mary Schwartz June 8 1879. they had ten children seven died. Survived by widow two sons William and Emerson a daughter Marie three daughters in law and four grandchildren. Funeral today at 2:30 pm at the house with Rev Kreiss officiating. Masonic services by Lowvale Lodge No 1139 A F and A M at the grave Oakland Cemetery Dolton.

Mrs Helen Pilz Dies of Hodgkins Disease at 49

Mrs Helen Pilz died Sunday November 4 at age 49 after a long illness described as Hodgkins disease. Funeral services were held Wednesday at her home 155 Kanawha Avenue with Rev Thompson of Dalton M E church officiating. Interment followed at Oak Lawn Cemetery Thornton. She leaves sons George Helmuth and Herbert and many friends. George recently married and will reside with his brothers at the family home.

Midwest Dismantling at Riverdale Plant Sparks Buyout Rumors

Machinery at the Midwest Sugar Refining plant near Riverdale has been mostly removed with engines and the steam plant remaining. The Bunte Company uses warehouse space for candy box storage made in Milwaukee and shipped to Chicago daily. Rumors of a box maker moving in arise as engineers test soil and Calumet River water. Riverfront access and transport links suggest the site will soon attract a modern plant. Also, Mr and Mrs Fred Hess announce the birth of a son at Ingalls Memorial Hospital on October 28.

Armistice Day Observances Planned by Dolton and Riverdale

Dolton and Riverdale will observe Armistice Day with a full program led by Paul Gall Post No. 303 American Legion aided by local civic, fraternal groups and students. The day includes a memorial service, a parade, a 2 pm patriotic service, a 3 pm football game, and a 6:30 pm banquet with motion pictures of the parade and participants to be shown later.

Red Cross Drive Gathers For Charity Effort

The annual Red Cross drive is on with Mrs Pauline Slaughter as general chairman for the neighborhood. A group of young ladies will assist in the effort. Be sure and get your button.

Banks Close Monday Armistice Day Holiday Notice

All banks will be closed next Monday in observance of Armistice Day. The 11th falls on Sunday, but Monday becomes a legal holiday in banking. Consumers are advised to conduct banking business on Saturday.

Drops Dead at Work In Riverdale School

Edward Erffmier a 60 year old carpenter for the Board of Education collapsed from a hemorrhage while working on the Riverdale Branch school and died on the first floor. He lived with his wife at 152nd and Kilpatrick Avenue Oak Forest. An inquest was planned at Bachman's Undertaking in Dalton.

Bodnar Shows Winter Here at Riverdale Carnival

Bodnar Bros. Carnival Plans winter storage in the Midwest Sugar Refining building in Riverdale. The Bodnar “boys” a large national company, long lived east of Dalton and once wintered in Crown Point. HQ in West Pullman. In March they will hire workers to clean and paint equipment for summer business.
