Smyth Named Harmony Candidate For Sanitary Board President
The Democratic Harmony Committee chose Thomas A. Smyth for Sanitary Board president citing his deep board experience. Smyth helped build the canal and served two terms as a director and two years as president, bringing strong executive ability and canal knowledge for Calumet Canal projects. Born in Chicago in 1848, he lived on the West Side, with residences at 2022 West Jackson Boulevard and later 157 LaSalle Street in retirement.

Los Angeles reports the largest rattlesnake killed in California by Henry Sutton an engineer for the San Diego and Arizona Railway near Carusa Gorge four miles from the Mexican line Sutton surprised the creature in a hillside stand and after a dramatic encounter captured it the snake measured four inches head to tail and seventeen inches in girth at the middle with twenty five rattles found when the tail was severed
