Riverdale Board Tackles Stray Dogs and Street Repairs

The Riverdale Board met in regular session with all members present. They discussed licensing stray dogs amid reports of dogs tearing up lawns and dumping by motorists, and directed the License Committee and Village Attorney Flick to amend the dog ordinance. They ordered repairs on 137th street and other avenues, arranged for water main work under railroad tracks, and placed slow signs on 188th and 137th streets near the park. Treasurer E J Schulte’s annual financial statement was ordered published. The board authorized street light placements and thanked Walter Deichen for a free fire siren switch installation. Health ordinance was delayed for next meeting, and a water main contract under Halsted tracks was referred for revisions. Bonds for W C Zesch & Son were approved.

Acme April Sales Hit Best Since October 1929

Acme Steel Co reports April sales the strongest since October 1929. For the first four months of 1930 the total nears $4.5 million, compared with $6.25 million in 1929, $4.5 million in 1928, and $3.5 million in 1927. Senator James E. MacMurray says business is normal but profits lag due to tighter margins.

Firemen Elect Officers at Blue Island Meeting

The Community Firemen's Association met in Blue Island on Monday evening May 26. Mayor Frank Kasten welcomed the firemen. Elected officers include President M. S. Phillips Chicago Heights Vice President John Link Blue Island Treasurer L. E. Reich Riverdale and Secretary Wm. E. Hart Thornton.

Nurses Graduate at Local Commencement Exercise

The third commencement of the Jeanette Hess Ingalls School of Nursing will be held Monday evening June 2 at 8 o'clock in the Harvey High School auditorium. Two local graduates are Evelyn Fike of Dalton and Minnie Shilling of South Holland along with five others from nearby towns. The program includes music, invocations, addresses by Mr. Frederick A. Ingalls and Dr. Harry E. Meek, solo performances, and diploma presentations.

Man Detains Freight Train At Bergen Turnpike

Ludwig Lanther waited beside the Erie crossing in East Rutherford New Jersey for a 124 car freight train to move. He uncoupled the cars and the train partially started, but Lanther stalled it and disabled the engine. He was arrested at his West New York home and charged in court.

Deaths Rudolph Schwarz longtime Riverdale harness maker

Rudolph Schwarz 80 of Riverdale and Dalton died last Tuesday at his daughter’s home in Riverdale after a long illness following a car injury seven years prior. Born February 3, 1850 in Birkhard Switzerland he emigrated to America in 1882 and ran a harness shop in Dalton. He leaves a son, three daughters, five grandchildren and many friends. funeral was May 29 at Berger M E Church with burial at Berger Cemetery. His brother Samuel, 82, died Friday at Forrest Park Home for the Aged and was buried Monday.

Memorial Day Program Observed by American Legion in Dalton

Memorial Day services will be conducted by Paul Gall Post No 308 of the American Legion at Oakland Cemetery in Dalton. A parade will form at Riverdale Village Hall at 1 30 p m with conveyance provided for Women’s Relief Corps American Legion Auxiliary Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of Riverdale and Dalton to the cemetery. Flags and banners are urged and the march will proceed on foot to the cemetery with bands and veterans from several patriotic organizations present.

Riverdale Troop 797 honors Scouts at Court of Honor

At the Court of Honor two weeks ago Herbert Brady completed second class requirements. On May 27 Harry Fredeman earned Life Scout, and John and Tom Kinney earned Star Scout. Troop 797 now has three Life and three Star Scouts. plans for a weekend hike are underway.
