Riverdale families learn two local servicemen freed
Two Riverdale youths, S/Sgt Frank Loichinger and Sgt John F Horan, were liberated from Germany and expected home soon. Loichinger, missing since August 1944, was in a German POW camp and is now in France awaiting return. Horan, missing since January, was freed and hospitalized in Belgium after a stint as a prisoner. Also, Sgt John W. Burch, liberated April 28 by the British, writes from Namur Belgium describing his relief and plans to homecoming along with brother Sgt Paul E. Burch, awaiting a June 21‑day furlough.

The Ivanhoe Park District board appointed Theodore L. Swan as president succeeding John J. Torpy. Fred Gronwall became vice president with Walden D. Whiston Ogden W. Munson and Harry W. Commander L E Brookfelt will lead the American Legion observance with Earl Slaughter delivering the address. Florals from patriotic groups will be placed. veterans of World War II and furloughed service members are invited to participate. A second service will be held Sunday at First Methodist church in Dolton with sermon titled worthy memorials.

Two-Car Halsted St Crash Injures Rider Near 144th
A late night Halsted Street collision involving a stalled bus and two southbound cars near 144th left a passenger injured. Michael Elashik, 27, of Hazelcrest, slowed to aid the bus, and James Powers, 22, of Harvey, swerved into Elashik’s lane causing a rear end crash. Beverly Grenier, riding in Powers’ car, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Ingalls Memorial hospital.

Poppy Day Observed Saturday Across Local Villages

Two Local Soldiers Reported Killed in Action in Germany
Local residents mourn two young men killed in Europe during World War II. Pvt. Russell J. Rogers died April 4 in Germany. his widow Helen Peney and their daughter Delores survive him along with his parents in Riverdale. Pfc. Warren M. Coleman, missing since April 14, was confirmed killed April 20. his wife Ruth Petersen and their two sons reside at 14117 Lincoln Ave with his parents and siblings. Curtis Burch, F-1, 24, formerly of Dalton, was killed March 26 aboard the destroyer Haliban in the South Pacific, leaving a wife Geraldine and daughter Judith Ann plus four sisters. The Burch family notes Curtis’s Wisconsin birth and Joliet area roots.
