William Workman a longtime Dalton resident and former Illinois and Eastern Indiana railroad conductor died May 23 at 780 Main St. Dalton Born August 25 1871 in Chicago funeral services were held at Bachmann and interment at Oak Hill Canton—Norwood Road. Survived by three brothers two sisters and many nephews and nieces. He served 43 years with the railroad.

Riverdale Youth Wins Silver Star in Germany
Eleven Illinois soldiers in the 100th Division of the Seventh Army received two Silver Stars and nine Bronze Stars for actions in France and Germany. Sgt. Harold L. Matz of Riverdale was among Silver Star recipients for bravery under fire as the division advanced from Bitche through the Siegfried Line to Ludwigshafen and the Rhine.

Softball Series Planned for Riverdale Cub Pack 16
Riverdale Cub Pack 16 at Riverdale Village hall planned seven softball games at Ivanhoe Park this summer. The schedule opens June 1 at 6 30 p m with Den 2 versus Den 3 and Den 4 against Den 5. The finale July 12 pits first place against second place in the Little World Series. A future outdoor meeting may be held in Riverdale Park if weather permits.

Furloughed Pvt Lennon Reunites With Family Amid Illness
Pvt Joseph Lennon and his wife traveled from Sioux Falls M D on a 10 day emergency furlough due to his mother’s serious illness and death in Chicago. Funeral services were held Wednesday May 23.

The Youth Activity Council reports the indoor carnival at the Riverdale Youth Center was a success. Proceeds go to council activities for local youth. Norma Pearson was chosen carnival queen by popular vote. The door prize winner of a 5 War Bond will be announced next week.

Tire Blows Out and Car Strikes Culvert on Halsted Street
A southbound car driven by Martin Stankus of 545 East 149th Street Harvey had a right front tire blow out between 140th and 141st on Halsted Street early Sunday. The vehicle struck a concrete culvert and was towed to Hastings Garage. Passenger Helen Stankus suffered facial cuts from a broken windshield and received first aid at Riverdale police station.
