Paving 144th Street Clears Way After Rail Road Settlement

Dalton village board learned final negotiations with the C and E I railroad are complete and 144th street paving can begin with W P A labor. The project includes removing a long unused hump near the crossing and using cadm asphalt. State highway approval and bid advertisements follow.

Schmeidl Kelly Bride Marry in Dalton Parsonage

Schmeidl daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Schmedl of Dalton married David Kelly of Chicago in the Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed church parsonage on Saturday March 25 at 4 30 in a single ring ceremony conducted by Rev Phil H Bassler. The bride wore a royal blue suit with light blue accessories and white sweet peas. Attendant Miss Mary Panozzo Dolton wore grey and pink sweet peas. Best man was Daniel Kelly Lansing. A wedding supper followed at the bride’s home with immediate relatives. The couple will reside in Dalton with the bride’s parents.

Mills & Sons Sell Two More Homes in Town

Mills & Sons report the sale of two additional houses, on 45 feet of ground, a Dutch Colonial and a French Chateau with five rooms each. Purchasers take possession immediately, bringing total homes sold since February 1, 1929 to eighteen.

A Chicago firm G. & G. Construction announces plans to build 100 modern $6,000 homes in Dalton in the New Chicago district near Roosevelt grade school and two blocks from Illinois Central station. Lots measure 40 and 450 feet with FHA loan approval, aided by water extensions and WPA labor, with model home at 331 West 146th Street ready for inspection.

Thornton Township High School PTA Elects New Officers

The Thornton Township High School and Junior College PTA elected new officers at its Tuesday evening meeting on March 28. Officers include President Mrs. Harry Hazelhurst Hazel Crest and vice presidents Mrs. E V Chapman Harvey, Mrs. W D O Hara Hazel Crest, among others. Faculty members Bradner and Harney serve as financial secretary and treasurer respectively.

Margaret De Bouck former Riverdale resident dies in Manteno

Margaret De Bouck nee Belz born April 5 1902 Riverdale died at her Manteno home on March 19. She married Jules J De Bouck March 19 1925 and is survived by her husband son Jules Jr and sister Emma Leichinger. Funeral services were held March 21 with Rev Smith and Rev Walter Kemnitz officiating. interment in Oakland Cemetery Dolton.

Dolton village board members revisited a 1901 bill from William Albrecht for fifty nine hours of labor totaling 8.85 dollars. The itemized work included police station help, cinders, ditching pipe, and stone unloading. Reading the aged document sparked questions on past wages as Clerk Haney noted village records go back to Dolton’s early days.

Annual Meeting of Thornton Township Set for April 4

Thornton Township residents are urged to attend the annual meeting at the village hall on April 4 at 2 pm. Supervisor William F. Thornton Township Tax Bills Due With Installment Deadlines

Tax bills for the first installment of 1938 taxes were issued to Thornton Township property owners. Township Collector Walter Haines will accept payments at the First National Bank of Dalton on April 10 and 17, at the First Trust and Savings Bank of Riverdale on April 12, and at the South Holland village hall on April 11 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Payments may be made at Dalton, Riverdale, and South Holland banks during banking hours through April 25, the penalty deadline.

Riverdale Dolton Lions Club members heard about the Seeing Eye dog Erna and its owner Bob Freemore of Roseland. The meeting discussed replacing the Main Street bus line with a Safeway run on Lincoln Avenue to Calumet City and Hammond, with G C Milhahn chairing the committee and IL Commerce Commission action anticipated.

Man Dies After 30 Foot Fall Into Railroad Gap

Lloyd A. Stringer 28 of Pontiac Michigan died from a fractured skull after a 30 foot fall between tracks on the Illinois Central superstructure at 135th street near State Street. He died at Ingalls Memorial hospital Harvey six hours after the 9 10 pm Friday incident. A coroner's inquest found accidental death. Stringer and companion Charles White 21 also of Pontiac were en route to St Louis planning to ride freight trains after layoff from Yellow Coach and Truck Manufacturing. White testified they left Pontiac March 22 and traveled by train before deciding to ride freight. Stringer body shipped to Jonesboro Arkansas for funeral services.
