Style of Louis Seize Furniture in the Louis XVI Era

The transition from Louis Quinze to Louis XVI styles arose after Italian influences from Pompeii and Renaissance origins. The Louis XVI form emphasizes rectangular outlines, refined carvings, straight slender legs, and lavish upholstery. Mahogany and exotic woods, porcelain from China, gilded bronze mounts, and marble tops define the period before the Revolution ended royal patronage and led to Versailles auction sales.
