A 1959 community X ray survey by the Tuberculosis Institute covering 25 towns found 441 TB suspects in the south suburbs. In Dolton 3 362 people were X rayed with 19 suspects, though not all residents were counted. More X rays were taken than in 1958 but fewer suspect cases were identified.
Seven month old Raymond J Morris died of burns received when hot lard spilled from an electric fryer in the Dalton home of James Morris and Joan Morris on March 3. The coroner ruled accidental death from toxemia due to scalding. Funeral services were held March 7 at Bachmann Funeral Home with burial in Oaklawn Cemetery.
The Brotherhood of Our Savior's Church in Riverdale will conduct a paper and scrap pickup drive on Saturday March 26. Residents may call VI 98 1092 or VE 1 0495 before the date to arrange pickups. Newspapers and magazines tied in bundles are greatly appreciated.
Over the past week icy conditions in Riverdale sparked several crashes. March 1 at 145th and Halsted led to arrests of Richard Jones for driving too fast for conditions and Larry Canada for failure to yield a left turn.
The village of Dolton issued 18 building permits in February with a total valuation of 153,732. Eight home permits valued at 140,225, four garage permits 3,507, and six home improvements 10,000. Riverdale issued four permits in February totaling 53,600 including two new homes 39,500, one store permit 14,000, and a business alteration 100.
The regular election for School District 149 board members is set for Saturday April 9. Three board seats will be on the ballot with March 19 as the petition filing deadline and March 22 for withdrawals. Petitions available from the Superintendent at 1506 Stoley Blvd Dolton.
District 149 will open bids Wednesday March 23 for 250 000 in land acquisition bonds approved by referendum. The lowest rate proposal may win though bids can be rejected. If awarded the district may seek an interest free state loan for a 36 room school on Sibley Boulevard near Calumet Expressway Dalton.
Joy Lynn Bock, Riverdale’s Leap Year baby of 1960, arrived at 3 34 a.m. February 29 at Roseland Community Hospital. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Siesel Bock of Wabash Avenue, Riverdale, with a brother Dale aged three and a half. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Hershel Bock and Mr. and Mrs. Alex Steinhauer.
Floverdale police report theft at Pat's Car Wash 14136 Indiana Avenue during March 6. Articles missing valued about 56 dollars include a generator battery distributor and a set of wires from an automobile parked inside the facility.
A fire at the Keystone Tube Company on Halsted Street Riverdale caused about 8500 in damages last Friday morning. Riverdale volunteers quickly extinguished the blaze, which was mainly on the roof, reportedly started when an oil salamander warmed the unheated building. Police officer Ed Swanson directed the pumper to the scene from his duty station. Riverdale volunteers also answered a call to Mr Nelson at 14327 Wabash Avenue after oil in a furnace overflowed on March 6.
Randal Foresta seven months old of 14429 Ellis Avenue Dalton was taken to South Chicago Hospital for emergency treatment and observation after drinking paint thinner on March 4.
The St Marys parish Riverdale fund drives aims at 275000 for debt relief and school expansion. Daniel Perry leads a large volunteer roster with associate chairs Michael Barsas and William OConnell and many division and auditing chairs. A kickoff dinner is planned for March 15 to train fund solicitors in the Just Share method, with pledges over 130 months.
Forest Preserve District announces a new pleasure boating facility on the south bank of the Little Calumet River between Riverdale and Blue Island. The $80,000 center will cover 30 acres east of Ashland Avenue and open by August 1 with launching ramps, a loading dock, parking for 109 cars and 30 boat trailers, and a connecting access road to Jackson Street. Charles C. Estes notes it is the first such facility and signals potential future plans depending on results.
Dolton led three local communities in retail sales tax receipts for November. Dolton reported receipts of 5,026.72, while Riverside totaled 3,907.96 and South Holland 4,084.30.
The United Cerebral Palsy Association names chairmen for the 1960 Cerebral Palsy fund drive in the area. Mrs. Toving Hyman leads Dalton, Mrs. Garret Dekker leads Riverdale, and Mrs. Walter Winters leads South Holland. Volunteer kits for the 53 Minute March will be mailed this week. those not receiving kits by March 15 should contact their captain. House to house marches occur in South Holland on March 19, and in Riverdale and Dalton on March 20 from 1 to 4 pm.
A Dolton village letter from Fred Kasten praises Chief Grover Cogswell and Sergeant Fred Mohr for solving a home burglary within 48 hours. Fingerprinting on a milk bottle and footprint tracing led to the burglar’s capture, underscoring reliable police and fire protection in the growing community.
The Pinta Council Ladies Auxiliary 1981 will hold its monthly meeting on Monday March 14 at the club house. Amalia Miller public relations assistant of Underwriters Laboratories Inc will speak and present a film on safety at home school and work.
Dolton schedules its annual Red Cross fund drive for Saturday March 12. Volunteer solicitors will go door to door seeking donations to aid servicemen veterans and their families disaster victims and support first aid water safety home nursing and Junior Red Cross activities.
A series of teen events runs Friday through Sunday at Riverdale and Ivanhoe parks fieldhouses. Activities include a Winter Champion Dance 1 30 to 11 p.m. for junior high and older, 75 cents. Jacks and Jills Lock Hop 8 p.m. with 34 cent donation. and dances featuring Jim Lounsberry’s The Millionaires, the Starfires, and an extra fine band. A Sunday record hop for 6th to 8th graders costs 50 cents. A Duke Box Jubilee is listed for March 16.
In Riverdale Ivanhoe and Chicago city side a March of Dimes drive raised 3731 dollars from schools coin boxes industries and Mothers March. Praise goes to First Trust and Savings Bank Riverdale staff bowling alleys Mothers March chair Mrs Sonhia Kelderhouse and Rev R Shawl along with Riverdale police reserve police and volunteer fire department and Loy al Order of Moose Roseland 1062 for support.
