Calumet waterway project moves forward with land grant sign and by pass contract

After decades of planning the Calumet river and Sag channel project advances as Heis Central withdraws objections to a land grant used for river straightening and a $703000 contract for three by passes was let to Morrison and Knudson of Boise. Four holdouts include Acme Steel Harmon Realty Pan Realty and Pipe o Pesce golf course.

Riverdale Firemen Install Officers

The Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department held an officer installation on Tuesday evening January 15. New officers include Joe Cale president Walter Oriel vice president Herman Dreesen treasurer Hilmer Stutzriem secretary Louis Reich asst chief Walter Deichen lieutenant of pumper John Diehl lieutenant of hook and ladder Ray Baumgartner captain of pumper Matt Buchler Jr captain of hook and ladder Herman Wiebke Ray Zoller assistant engineers Chief Edward Ripley received a gold badge for service. The group discussed taking out blanket insurance for the firemen and this will be decided at the next village board meeting with President William J. Claussen and other board members in attendance.

New Calumet City Post Office Planned At 120000

Calumet City announces a new post office with a projected cost of 120000 and plans for a premier building for its size. Construction on Wentworth avenue north of the administration building is set to begin March 1. A Wednesday night windstorm blew out plate glass at Dreger store 191401 Indiana avenue causing about 150 in damage. At the American Legion Juniors meeting on January 12 a birthday cake surprise honored Frankie Albrecht the junior advisor. 25 members attended with gifts of silk stockings. Mr and Mrs Elmer Rentned and Mrs Mary Reed of LaCrosse Ind were guests of Mr and Mrs Ray Baumgartner the past week.

Thornton township to receive personal property schedules soon from township assessor Thos Salkeld to help owners list goods on a depreciation basis. County assessor John S Clark announced the new plan intended to aid homeowners in completing schedules, noting that while household goods should be exempt up to a minimum, the law prohibits such exemption.
