Dolton Village Board Pushes Crossing Safety and Pay Reforms

The Dolton Board met with all members present and discussed several items including rail crossings frost damage, erratic street lights, and water rates for park use. They voted to reject a low bid for a pup roller, set salaries for treasurer and clerk, and plan changes to vehicle tax ordinances. A watchman would be placed at the Indiana Avenue 139th Street crossing after a fatal accident. Public hearings on Main Street paving and Cottage Grove Avenue opening were scheduled for March 11 and March 18, with notices mailed to property owners.

Riverdale Board Acts On Crossing Protection And Parkways

The Riverdale Board met Tuesday night with President Price presiding. It directed notifying the railroad to install gates at the Indiana Harbor crossing at Indiana avenue and 139th street. It also urged Public Service Co. to repair parkways damaged in winter by laying new gas mains, restoring them to their previous condition.

Ivanhoe Garden Club Meets With Lectures and Tea

The Ivanhoe Garden Club met at Mrs. Gerald Byrnes home with a book review on practical gardening and two lectures on home vegetable gardening and making a garden. Refreshments featured Mrs. Byrnes’s small individual cakes. The Ivanhoe Civic Club plans a card party and dance March 1 at Branigar Bros. Building with 35 cent admission. Women’s Club members visited Garfield Park conservatory for a lecture by Mrs. Maud Jacobs on raising perennials from seed.

Memorial for Corporal Frank L. Mills in Cedar Park cemetery

A funeral service honors Corporal Frank L. Mills, veteran of World War I, with Legion salute and bugle calls. Mills, who served in the 131st regiment, 33rd division, left a widow Evelyn Robinson and three small children, Betty Ann, Patricia Jean, and Jack, after battling war injuries and illness. His life is recalled by family and comrades from Riverdale and Kenosha. He died February 22 at Speedway hospital. His wife and children survive along with his parents, brothers, and sisters.

Mohr Rites Mark Riverdale Resident’s Death

Henry W. Mohr of Riverdale died Thursday February 20 at age 78 years 8 months 6 days after long illness. Born in Alveslake Schlesurze Holstein Germany November 14 1852 he married Helena Lentfer August 16 1875. They came to America and Riverdale in 1881. Survived by daughters Katherine Kumrei Emma Niewald and son Henry J. Mohr. 14 grandchildren 8 great grandchildren and many relatives. Funeral services were Monday at St Paul’s Church with Rev Kemnitz. interment Oakland Cemetery.

Riverdale Firemen Enjoy Community Night Gathering

Riverdale hosted a social for 134 visiting firemen from area cities showing a Peter Kurz film at the Riverdale theatre followed by lunch at the Village Hall. Mayor Frank Price and village trustees welcomed the guests as the Firemen’s Association celebrated together. Night prowlers struck Robert Alprecht’s home last Sunday while the family was away, stealing jewelry and other valuables.

Gasoline Blaze Averted by Quick Thinkers at Schmutzler Station

An 8 o clock fire near a gas pump was stopped by Christ Schmutzler and engineer K S Putnam. Putnam smothered the blaze after lighting a pipe with a match as the tank opened. Riverdale firemen arrived promptly, Christ injured a sore hand, wind fueled fumes, and residents warned to handle gasoline carefully.

William J. Haney and son Robert head to Phoenix to join Mrs. Haney and Helen. Mrs. Haney’s group visits and shares health notes while others travel to Hanna Indiana for farm moves. In Dalton and Riverdale, family illnesses, weddings, and a birthday gathering mark community life with several hospital stays and a new baby girl.

Two Boys Die In Riverdale Train Collision

A late Sunday crash at the Indiana Avenue crossing near 139th Street Riverdale killed two young men and left another badly injured. Robert Kirkwood 21 of 220 West 104th Court died at Ingalls Memorial Hospital. Edward Schemensky 21 died at County Hospital. Robert Novich 18 survived with minor injuries. Investigators cite poor crossing protection and night glare as factors as the train struck the 5 passenger Buick. Funeral services for Kirkwood were held at the Presbyterian church and Schemensky's at Holy Rosary. Community calls for gates and crossing watchmen persist.
