South Holland to buy Berean Church for free public library

The village board approved purchasing the old Berean Church building for 17500 to establish a free public library. A three member library commission will catalog books. New appointments include Dr. Carl Walboard to Plan Commission, Henry DeVries as Civil Defense director, and Harold De Young as Chief of Fire Prevention. President Gouwens urged residents to curb garbage burning and follow the fire prevention code.

Niece Of Local Man Dies In Belgian Jet Crash

Dona Lee Carrier 20 of Roseland and niece of Riverdale resident Leroy Carner died when a Belgian Boeing jetliner near Brussels crashed. She was part of the 18 member United States Figure Skating Team en route to Prague. Roger Campbell, her partner, also perished. The crash killed all 72 aboard and a farmer on the ground. Carrier had recently placed second in the North American Figure Skating Championship with Campbell.

Girls Stage Minstrel Show at Madison School Gym

The Gal Scout Troop No 179 led by Mrs. Richard Lucas Mrs. James Cameron and Mrs. Walter Post present a minstrel show on February 24 at 7 30 pm in the Madison School gym to raise funds for a Warren Dunes camp. Tickets 75 cents adults 25 cents children. performances include songs dances pantomime and more with refreshments available. A baby boy was born to Mr and Mrs Jacob DeBoer on January 30.

Dolton Board Rejects Rezoning for 100 Apartments at Lincoln and Cottage Grove

Dolton trustees denied a petition to rezone three acres at the northwest corner of Lincoln and Cottage Grove to allow 100 apartments. The decision aligns with the Zoning Board of Appeals. The board also denied La Salle National Bank’s request to rezone Sibley between Irvine and Evers for 73 dwellings. An ordinance created a new classification for two Chicago id lots to permit two apartments, with brick exteriors. Parking restrictions were also approved on Penosshanma Ave from 142nd to Jefferson to limit street parking.

Registration of Voters in Riverdale Opens for Three Days

Riverdale villagers may register at the Clerk's office located at 137th and Wabash Avenue for three days. Registration runs Wednesday March 1, 1961 from 9 am to 4 pm, Thursday March 2, 1961 from 9 am to 4 pm, and Friday March 3, 1961 from 9 am to 4 pm and 7 pm to 8 pm. Village Clerk Peter J Kurz oversees the notice.

Walvoord a long time South Holland physician will join the planning commission to fill the unexpired term of Harold Jacobs who moved away. Walvoord a Rush Medical alum and Army veteran serves at Ingalls Memorial Hospital and co founded the Medical Center at 16066 South Park. World Day of Prayer marks 75th anniversary observance

The 75th World Day of Prayer will be observed in 145 countries. In Riv erdale-Dalton the service is at Ivanhoe Reformed Church at 143rd and Wabash Riv erdale starting 1 30 pm. Nursery for preschoolers available. Rev L Sigler of Jones Memorial Center will deliver the message.

Thornton superintendent named NASSP president

Dr. James D. Logsdon, superintendent of Thornton Township High Schools and Junior College since 1957, has been named president of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. He co authored two books on school administration.

Park Rd and School Board Issue Joint Statement

The Dalton Park Board and School Board of District No. 148 issue a joint statement from Feb 12 1961 clarifying that the $228 monthly rental for Dalton Park Fieldhouse is not excessive and noting park facilities costs. They acknowledge kindergarten issues at Franklin School relate to the Lincoln School bond plan and the aim for regular school buildings.
