The Pokagon Trails Council Boy Scouts of America launches its annual fundraising drive Feb 8 14 across 32 communities including Riverdale and Ivanhoe. Chairs Edward Kennedy and Mrs Fred Gore lead with Dalton drive planned for next month as weather improves. Riverdale Ivanhoe led 900 contributed last year, highlighting community support for Scouting programs Cub Scouts and Senior Scouting.

Deferred Registrants Face Reclassification for Absenteeism
Col. Paul G. Armstrong announced that workers deferred for war plant employment who fail to log the full work week will be reclassified as available for military service. He has mailed over 3,700 letters to Illinois employers asking for names of such employees and urged adherence to War Manpower Commission hours. Some workers quit or are fired out of enthusiasm for their tasks.

Spinozzi Awarded Bronze Star for Actions in Germany
S/Sgt. Louis J. Spinozzi of Riverdale received the Bronze Star for leading a forward patrol near Zwiefau Germany on October 10 1944. Placed under heavy fire he advanced to gain observation and directed artillery against enemy positions. Spinozzi’s leadership and bravery were cited as a credit to the United States Armed Forces. He has since been promoted to staff sergeant.

Willard Groeling Wounded on Luzon in World War II
Willard Groeling of Delton was wounded in action on the Island of Luzon and has been hospitalized for two and a half months. He has two years in service with the 136th Infantry. His brother George Jr. serves with a quartermaster unit in France.

Doyle Earns Commendation Ribbon for Pacific Service
Thomas Doyle, Coast Guard seaman first class, 21, of Dalton, is assigned to the Chicago Lifeboat Station after 20 months aboard a Coast Guard manned LST in the Pacific. His ship took part in seven invasions and downed three Japanese fighters and one bomber. He received the Commendation Ribbon with one star for the Admiralty Islands invasion. His crew helped down one plane at Leyte during the Philippines invasion.
