Dolton Fireman Struck After Extinguishing Expressway Blaze
Dolton volunteer fireman John B. Slager 505 Eagle St. Dolton was seriously injured on the Calumet Expressway near 43rd Street while returning to his car after extinguishing a mattress fire igniting a car. Adrian R. Vanzant 22 of Chicago struck Slager, throwing him 50 feet. Slager sustained fractures, internal and head injuries. He remained semi conscious at St Francis Hospital as surgeons evaluated him. Paul Ripley, Dolton Fire chief, called for precautions to protect responders. Slager has served on the Dolton Fire Department executive board since 1952 and is president of the Dolton Park Board.

Vincent Shap aged 25 sustained multiple fractures to his left hand after his hand was caught in an elevator door at the Acme Steel Company in Riverdale. He was assisted by coworkers and transported to Roseland Community Hospital according to Riverdale police.
