Flower Show Draws Crowds in Riverdale Village Hall

The Riv erdale Flower Show held August 2 8 drew strong crowds despite poor weather. Mrs Preston P Smith led the Ivanhoe Garden club with judges from Chicago and Tinley Park praising the display. Prizes went to Riverdale and Ivanhoe residents for bouquets ribbons and table displays.

Dolton Faces Typhoid Advisory as Water Warned

Twenty years ago Dolton issued typhoid warnings with placards urging boiling drinking water and milk. The Board of Health sought the infection source and urged precautions while tracing details. Miss Emma Scheer Ruth Young and Eureka Fisher visited Thornton. Illinois Central upgrades Riverdale station and patrons seek better depots. Guild of First Presbyterian Pullman held lawn party at Grant girls’ home. Mrs Peter Kurz toured Cassopolis Michigan. Mr Kurz planned a short trip there.

Harry Hartford Dies After Sudden Illness

Harry Hartford, veteran C and E I locomotive engineer born in Chicago on February 6, 1875, died suddenly after a clot ended his condition at Ingalls Memorial Hospital. He leaves a widow, two sons Elmer and Robert, daughters Violet Elizabeth and Pearl, four grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, with funeral at 8:00 pm Saturday at 535 Margaret Street and burial at Mt. Greenwood Cemetery.

Artist A J Brookfelt dies after long illness

Albert J Brookfelt who ran a Riverdale painting and decorating business with his father J C Brookfelt for many years died Tuesday August 5 at age 64. He lived in Riverdale 36 years and was active in local affairs. He leaves a widow three sons R E Brookfelt postmaster of Dalton Lester and Harry one daughter Alberta and two grandchildren. Funeral services are at Bachmans chapel Dalton at 2:00 this Friday with interment in Oakland Cemetery.

Thieves Loot Cars at Carrs Beach After Weenie Roast

A Riverdale party of 12 at Carrs Beach faced theft when thieves ransacked locked cars after a Wednesday outing. Two watches four pocketbooks several purses and diamond rings were stolen. Drivers John Hankey Nugent Hankey and Clifford Richter describe the incident as a warning to others.

Forest Preserve Fire Near Harbor Tracks

Firefighters responded to a prairie fire at the Forest Preserve near 144th and Halsted last Wednesday, working from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. The blaze spread from the field center toward multiple directions, threatening houses at the south end until crews gained control.

Cable theft leads trio bound for grand jury

Three men Nathaniel Green Lafayette Cox and Warren Robinson were accused of stealing a coil of lead and copper cable from Collinson Coal yards in Dalton last Sunday night. Police traced the truck to Chicago and the trio was bound over to the grand jury after being taken to Dalton and questioned by authorities. The wire belonged to the American Telephone and Cable Co which had left it in the yard for safekeeping.

Propper Family Trip Notes From Heidelberg 1930

In a brief July 26 1930 entry The Propper Family reports attending the Passion Play in Heidelberg and enjoying it. They describe a stop in Munich and travel plans to cruise the Rhine from Mainz to Cologne and onward to Berlin under den Linden. Mrs Propper is recovering and all send regards.

Fire crew reported a nozzle lost from a fire truck en route to a blaze at 146th and Halsted street Wednesday forenoon. Finder please return or notify the fire station by calling Riverdale 40. Master Harold Myrick and friends traveled to Alabama recently and now have a tan. Miss Ida Vanderhoop of The Pointer plant is on a two week vacation at Phelps Wisconsin with relatives and aims to become a leading woman fisherman in that area. Mrs. David McLane and her sister Carrie visited Riverdale friends after attending a flower show last Sunday. Mrs. E A Ripley and Delores returned from a month’s vacation at the Wm Claussen summer cottage. Mary Kipley spent the weekend with her mother and sister.

Prowlers Nabbed As Kensington Police Nab Robbers

Kensington police report rapid arrests of multiple prowlers at Brooks Drug Store, 13941 Leyden Ave Riverdale. A Blue Island suspect and two Kansas City youths from recent burglaries were caught near the rear and front doors while attempting entry. The force has kept the store under vigilant surveillance after earlier break ins.

Behrens Returns After Idaho Visit

Lenore Behrens, nurse in charge at the Ingalls- Sheppard Forging plant, Harvey, returned home Tuesday after a month with her parents Mr and Mrs John Behrens at Bliss Idaho. Her father, a respected irrigated-farm leader, directs crops well and heads the fall ticket for state representative. bronchial asthma brought him to Bliss for health.
