Dalton police chief Grover Cogswell said he has received many complaints from parents about local shops selling cigarettes to minors. He outlined penalties including fines of 50 dollars for first offenses and 100 dollars for second arrests, plus up to 30 days in county jail. He cited the Criminal Code Chapter 36 Section 124 imposing a 10 dollar misdemeanor for under-18s smoking on public roads or parks.

At Harvey Moose Lodge No. 1203 on April 18, a corps of officers was installed led by Governor William Brandenburg and Jr Governor William Scully. Sixty two area officers completed five weeks of basic training in General Law Enforcement. The March 7 to April 18 course in the Dalton Municipal Building involved 14 Dolton and 6 Riverdale officers, plus four Dolton clerks. Sponsored by Justice, Illinois Police Association and Chiefs of Police.

Four hubcaps stolen from Carl Seip’s car on 71 E. 137th. a battery removed from Herbert Sam merfeld’s auto at Acme Steel lot. two tires taken from Marcus’s trunk at 1 West 140th. four hubcaps stolen from John Edelhofer’s car at 14537 Normal. An attempted break-in at William Gedzun’s home 14129 LaSalle. basement screen door cut and entry marks found.

Kenneth Lowenberg, son of Mr and Mrs Lester Lowenberg of 14521 Dearborn Riverdale, serves as assistant music chairman for Northwestern Universitys 1958 Waa-Mu Show Among Friends. The musical revu opens seven performances May 27 at Cahn Auditorium Evanston. Kenneth is a 1957 Thornton Township high school graduate and Phi Mu Alpha member.
The Dorchester Club in Dolton launched Duplicate Contract Bridge for members and guests with April 21 as the first weekly session. East West winners were Mr and Mrs William Morry, Ralph Johnson and Mrs Erline Wischover, and Mary K McGough with Jean Christoferson. North South winners were Mrs Roy Stevens and Lenore Ellison, Mrs Earl Rettig and Ben Levin, with Fark Reitz and Mrs B Eichner in third. The club, affiliated with the American Contract Bridge League, will issue fractional Master Points and plans bridge lessons. director Jay G Brown of Ixanhoe leads the duplicate game.
The Cancer Crusade in Riverdale raised 1098.38 dollars from homes and businesses. Campaign chair Mrs. John Gasperi leads 100 captains and volunteers with Riverdale Police protection. funds support cancer efforts in the Riverdale area.
Roosevelt Park P T A hosts a tea for parents of children entering kindergarten in September. The Park School tea is at 3 15 in the Kindergarten Room on Tuesday May 3 and Roosevelt School tea at 3 00 in the All Purpose Room on Wednesday May 4. Parents meet their child s first teachers tour the kindergarten rooms and meet the new classmates.
Veterans march in a Loyalty Day parade on Sunday May 1 in Chicago Heights with the VFW unit backing the effort. Dalton police will strictly enforce windshield tag display starting May 1 and warn arrests for drivers without tags.
St Paul Lutheran Christian Day School will hold registration for the next term on Tuesday May 3 from 8 30 a m to 3 p m. New entrants for fall must register now. Kindergarten eligibility requires five by December 31. Limited spots due to staff and space. Board of Christian Education will review applications and notify parents. Some areas lack bus service. parents arrange transportation.
The suburb area will sound sirens on Tuesday May 3 signaling Operation Alert 1960 civil defense exercise. County officials urge residents to tune radios to 640 and 1240 from 1 to 1:30 pm and heed the drill’s importance. A child, Jeffrey Achterhoff, flew to Florida to visit grandparents in Pompano Beach with his great uncle.
Dolton residents are urged to clear basements and attics for the annual Dolton volunteer fire department pick up. Pickup starts at 9 am Saturday April 30 and continues through Sunday May 1 with sections West of Chicago Road and the Valley scheduled for Saturday and Section East of Chicago Road for Sunday.
President Daniel Ryan of the county board officiated at a ground breaking on April 20 signaling the start of construction of a 240 bed unit at Oak Forest hospital. The two-story building with basement will cost $1,797,958, expanding the county’s campus to 61 buildings on 337 acres at the southeast corner of 10th Street and Cicero are, near Oak Forest village.
Troop 224 held a mother and daughter splash party on Wednesday April 20 at West Pullman Park Pool. Leaders included Mrs E Grigalt Mrs A Lundskog and Mrs D Glass as attendees enjoyed a fun wet event.
Thomas Lavelle, 30, of Dolton, was trapped when his car left 100th and Doty and toppled into a drainage ditch. Walter Burke, 40, and city workers waded through waist-deep water to keep Lavelle’s head above water until police and firemen arrived. Lavelle suffered back injuries three fractured ribs and head cuts and was hospitalized.
