Thornton township primary candidates seek ballots Tuesday

Candidates on the Thornton township ballot include William F. Propper for State Representative Seventh District Republican and Arthur E. Dillner for Democratic township committeeman. Other offices up for election include U.S. Senator Congressman at large state treasurer superintendent of public instruction and various county posts. Polls run 5 am to 6 pm with local figures James Gouwens and others contesting for township posts.

First Chicago Raid Test on April 15

Chicago plans a civil defense air raid warning test in the metropolitan area at 7 p m on April 15. Sirens air horns and whistles across fixed and mobile devices will sound in a six minute alert followed by a two minute all clear. Block wardens will observe and report audibility.

School Elections Set for Districts 148 133 and Thornton

Polls for District 148 open 12 noon to 7 p m at Lincoln and Washington schools on April 11 for a president and three board members with terms up to three years. Anne De Ridder seeks president for an unexpired year while Roy Nelson Perbert Hinze and George W Allen run for seats. District 133 polls at Bowen school 1 to 5 p m elect one board member. Thornton township high school also votes April 11 for two incumbent directors George H Gibson and Walter Haines seeking reelection.

Thornton township tax collection period ends April 20

Walter Haines township collector and staff prepare for a large tax collection rush as the first installment 1941 taxes face a final deadline of Monday April 20. Payments are accepted at Riverdale Dolton and South Holland banks during banking hours with refunds applied as credits against 1941 bills.

Rites Held Monday for Gustav Korhaus

Gustav Korhaus, former undertaker in the community, died Thursday April 2 at his daughter’s home in Hegewisch. He and Anna observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1941. Survived by widow, one son Arthur, two daughters Gertrude Tisbitts and Mildred Jensen, and one granddaughter. Funeral from his Hegewisch home to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Bertha Martens Rites Held at St Paul Lutheran

Funeral services for Bertha Augusta Martens of Riverdale were held at St Paul Lutheran Church. Mrs Martens, born August 15 1887 in Chicago, died April 6 at Chicago Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Survived by husband William Sr two daughters Emma Bradley Loretta Stark two sons Louis Dalton and William Jr six grandchildren. Interment Mount Greenwood. Bachmann funeral home in charge.

13 Dolton Men Named in Army Draft Call

Thirteen Dolton men are listed in the latest draft call issued by the Lansing Selective Service board along with fifty-three draftees who will depart next Thursday, April 16, for induction. The Dolton group includes Robert Glenn Zwiers and others with addresses on Engle, Indiana, Forest, Lincoln, Chicago, and Kanawha avenues, as well as Greenwood and Pratt streets. Additional inductees from South Holland and Lansing are named, including Bergman, Gibson, Ritter, Carfion, Van Drunen, Gouwens, and Johnson.

Salvage for Victory drive planned for Dalton April 18

Dalton Civilian Defense leaders announce a Saturday April 18 salvage collection to aid the nation and fund council activities. Residents are urged to curb scrap from homes basements attics and garages and place items on the curb for pickup with help for heavy objects if needed. A film Salvage for Victory will be shown at Dolton theater the week of April 11 to illustrate the urgency of scrap materials for armament production.

Driver Crashes Through Two Cars and Pole in Riverdale

Charles Cook of Dalton loses control Sunday April 5 causing his car to hit two parked cars and a telephone pole at 188th and La Salle. Police estimate skids of fifty five and forty feet after the first collision. trunk and left rear fender damaged. Owner of Cook’s car is H Haeger of Dalton. Cook’s car belonged to C Wilbur of Frankfort Illinois and was moved to Hastings garage in Dolton.

Dolton Epworth League Wins Attendance Plaque

The Epworth league of the First Methodist church in Dolton earned an attendance plaque for the largest representation at a March 14 sub district meeting in Morgan Park. The Dal ton league secured the award for the first time in eight years with Miss Bettajean Nairn accepting. Sub district rallies, held bi monthly, promote fellowship among young people.
