In Riverdale and surrounding communities churches outline Easter Sunday activities after Holy Week. St Marys offers Masses at 7 830 and 10 with benediction at 11. Our Savior Community church hosts Sunrise 6 45 Holy Communion 10 45. Junior choir Easter concert at 745 led by Miss Reich.
Good Friday designated a legal holiday with banks and schools closed. Union services will be held at Emanuel Evangelical and Reformed Church Grant and Sheridan from 1 45 to 2 45 p m with pastors Palm Freeman and Bassler discussing the seven words of the cross. Music provided by cooperating churches. public invitation extended.
Tire thieves worked in Riverdale last Thursday night or Friday morning. John Cowings’s garage at 22 East 137th Street was broken into with wheels and tires stolen from his cars and from Arthur Quandt at 11 East 137th Place. Tires also vanished from Milton Miller’s car at 17 East 138th Street the same night.
The Pullman Standard Car Mfg Co will start a large shipbuilding plant at the south end of Lake Calumet to build 180 foot patrol boats for the Navy. First keels are planned in August with production starting soon, employing about 3000 workers and boosting local industry.
Dolton Riverdale Woman's club with defense committees and civilian defense councils arranged two home nursing training courses for women. One class runs Wednesdays 7 to 9 starting April 8. another Wednesdays 1 to 3 starting April 15 at Riverdale village hall. A third class may be added due to strong interest. The course covers ten lessons.
Illinois enacts Good Friday as a legal holiday and orders Friday observances. Riverdale and Dolton merchants close 12 to 3 PM in cooperation with the observance group. Local banks and a building loan association will remain closed all day Good Friday.
Miss Edith Dolton proprietor of the Woodshed lunchroom at 14011 Lincoln avenue Dolton reported a break in Monday night. 50 cents in pennies one box of cigars chewing gum and matches were taken. A piece of pie was eaten and defense stamps near the cash area were not touched.
At the Riv erdale village board meeting on March 24 trustees reported the new auxiliary fire truck chassis was delivered but needs a rationing board certificate before body mounting. Residents from Ivanhoe discussed a petition on future Ivanhoe building types and a meeting with the Board of Local Improvements was urged.
The Group holds a Chicago area sectional meeting on Saturday April 11 at 10 46 AM in the Medical and Dental Arts building 185 North Wabash Avenue On the intermediate level Miss Mildred Letton University of Chicago will discuss Methods of Guiding Children in Creative Writing Primary speaker Dr C A Aldrich Children s Memorial Hospital Chicago The kindergarten panel on Democratic Practice in the Home School and Community features Miss Olga J Adams James Mann and Mrs Armin Elmerdorf with Hubbard Woods Wilmette Highcrest venues.
Dalton Riverdale Woman's club earned Third District recognition at the March 31 meeting in Chicago. Betty Mae Krepps won first prize for her essay The Heritage of America, now entered in the state contest, and Lincoln school will receive the prize books. Louise Ewert was named Third District music chairman and Della Deam was elected Third District corresponding secretary.
Dolton Civilian Defense council announced a salvage for victory campaign to aid armament production and fund civilian defense in Dolton. A sound film titled Salvage for Victory will play at the Dolton theater before scrap collection day. details will follow next week. Householders are urged to save paper, rags, rubber, metal scrap for the drive.
Township Committeeman Arthur E. Dillner announces all Democratic candidates on the regular slate will attend a mass meeting at Whittier school Harvey next Wednesday April 8 1942. Citizens urged to hear candidates and discuss issues ahead of the April 14 1942 primary. A similar meeting is planned at Eagles hall Calumet City on April 9.

Riverdale Civilian Defense Council held its first public mass meeting Tuesday evening at the Washington school. The event shows rising local interest in civilian defense and the community’s setup.
Riverdale and Dolton banks along with the Dolton Riverdale Building and Loan will remain closed all day on Good Friday April 3 a legal holiday proclaimed by Governor Green.
An extensive Halsted Street crash involves four trucks and a sedan after a left turn from the I H B viaduct. Stanley Uphane and Mike Holcomb are injured. Uphane’s car later burst into flame but no severe injuries reported. meerdere accidents on icy Halsted followed with two vehicle crashes near the Calumet river and a third over the B and C T railroad.
Mr and Mrs Frank Thompson of Dalton announce the engagement of their daughter Helen to Dr J F Cannon of Springfield Illinois. The couple met at an engagement party Saturday night March 28 and plan a spring wedding. Cannon serves as a lieutenant in the navy flying hospital and awaits station assignment. Other guests included Mr and Mrs George Martin of Steger Mr and Mrs William Powers Jr of Blue Island Mr and Mrs Hubert Casten of Harvey Mr and Mrs Henry Propper Jr of Dolton and Mr and Mrs H T Conley of Chicago. Mrs William Bockelman of Dolton was admitted to Ingalls Memorial hospital in Harvey March 25 for a goitre operation Monday.
