Calumet Harbor plan cleared and work to start soon

After a long stalemate between the city and state authorities, Calumet Harbor moves forward with a revised agreement. Nickel Plate will pay 600000 for riparian rights and the city adds 600000, totaling 1200000 for dredging. Construction may begin within thirty days and finish in about three years.

Robbery at Alderman Govier Home

Mrs. Sheldon W. Govier discovered a break in at 11306 Vernon Avenue last Monday afternoon. A thief entered the residence in the alderman’s absence and took about $130 in cash.

American Legion Notes and Easter Sale Announced

Baltimore & Ohio to Build $7,000,000 Halsted Shops

The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad moved to establish a $7 million shop complex at Halsted and 188th streets. Harvey city council approved a water contract dated March 21, with Riverdale village to follow. The plan aims to consolidate shops at this site, replacing facilities in Indiana Ohio and other locations, with development of a new freight car line also under consideration.

New Battery Shop Opens in Dalton on Washington Street

Gerrit Jacobsoa has moved into a new building on Washington Street in Dalton next to his old shop. A grand opening is planned for Saturday April 9 and invites all old customers and friends to call for a souvenir. The new facility is roomy and up to date and will enable a substantial increase in business.

Death of Nellie VanderVliet Fourteen Year Old Phoenix Native

Nellie VanderVliet died at home in Phoenix on Sunday morning April 3 after a two year illness with a relapse in the final weeks. Survived by her parents and sister Tienie, the family notes many friends in Phoenix and South Holland connections. Funeral services were held from the home and First Reformed church with burial at Oak Lawn. Also a Dalton Chicago street keys found and a phone contact for Dolton 601.

Calumet City to Get New Dog Race Track

The Calu met Kennel Racing and Amusement Co board, with directors from Chicago Gary and Hammond, sanctioned land purchase on Torrence Avenue Calumet City for a dog race track to open on Decoration Day. Marshall Butts Gary and Judge Joseph Todd Hammond elected president and secretary treasurer. Butts will supervise construction.

Court Action Means Sewer for Highlawn Approved

Judge Biggs confirmed the Highlawn sewer system this morning enabling rapid development and paving of 188th street from Lincoln to Halsted and likely Ashland. The Dalton Board approved the ordinance and estimate for the new sewer system at the south end after over a year of debate and two engineer reviews. The board will install a double pipe under the Western Indiana track at Lincoln to protect water mains and curb leaks.

Thompson Elected Mayor of Cheago by 83,072 Vote Plurality

William Hale Thompson was elected mayor of Cheago last Tuesday by a plurality of 83,072 voters. The vote split along party lines with Thompson the Republican winner. In the 9th Ward 9th precinct results showed Thompson ahead by 815, indicating support from Riverdale voters and the city’s big interests.
