Dolton Board Moves to Collect Past Special Assessments

The Dolton village board ordered foreclosure steps through Attorney Harold L. Summerfield to collect overdue special assessments, aiming to clean up bonds. They approved Ivanhoek Manor subdivision plans by Teninga and Co. of Roseland with 126 lots and defense homes, and discussed repair cooperation with the state highway department on 144th street. Alleys were repaired with cinders, and the clerk was directed to request action from the Pennsylvania Railroad over locomotive smoke.

Propper to Complete Training as Air Corps Pilot

Lieut. Commander William S. Propper son of Henry M. Propper of Dalton completed 50 hours of solo flying and core tests at the U S Air Corps training school in Coleman Texas He plans to leave Saturday for an advanced flying school likely Randolph or Kelly Field to receive his commission as a pilot in the Air Corps

Stores to Close for Good Friday Observance in Riv erdale and Dalton

Merchants in Riverdale and Dalton will close from noon to 3 pm on Good Friday. Signs at stores show support for the observance begun in Roseland by local Catholic and Protestant laymen. Special services are planned at Immanuel Evangelical and Reformed church with four pastors attending. Local banks and the building and loan association will be closed all day.

Travelogues Presented at Dalton Riverdale Junior Meeting

Travelogues New Orleans and Mexico were shown by a Illinois Central representative during the American citizenship and education program at Riverdale village hall on March 23. Miss Marjorilee Hampton led with a reading George de Wash and patriotic singing followed. Millicent Dreck served as education chair.

Dillner Seeks Election as Thornton Township Committeeman

Arthur E. Dillner of Dalton seeks the Democratic committeeman post for Thornton township. He previously served as justice of the peace and is completing an unfinished term as township committeeman. Dillner has the Cook County Central committee endorsement. Primary set for Tuesday April 14. He is opposed by Louis Kamykowski police magistrate of Phoenix.

Prairie Blazes Keep Firemen Busy

Mild weather and dryness sparked fires in Riverdale and Dolton. Dolton crews fought a brush fire near Camp Grounds north of Sibley Boulevard at 10 15 AM, then tackled sparks from a freight engine igniting grass and timber behind Dreck Coal’s warehouse. Riverdale firefighters doused a brush fire behind Washington School on Monday, and late Tuesday a large prairie fire in Ivanhoe was controlled without property damage.

Township Reorganizes Police Dept In Emergency Move

The Thornton township board of auditors reorganizes the police force reducing it to 44 officers plus one assistant chief Edward Van Laningham. Services Held Monday for Joseph Kum arowski

Funeral services for 66 year old Joseph Kumarowski of 304 East 138th Street were held Monday afternoon at 2 at Bachmann funeral home with Rev. Milton Freeman officiating. Interment followed in Oakland Cemetery Dalton. He died Friday night March 20 at the Oak Forest Infirmary after six days illness from pulmonary tuberculosis. Born February 11 1886 in Taurage Lithuania he immigrated to America in 1906 settling in Chicago. He married Bertha Sprainis in 1914 and worked 12 years for International Harvester. In 1926 he moved to this community where he ran a grocery in the same building where he lived for 15 years. He is survived by his widow two daughters Ann wife of William De Camp Riverdale and Josephine wife of Delmar Yandell Chicago a brother Peter West Pullman and Anthony who is in Europe and two grandchildren.

Banks and Building and Loan Close for Good Friday

Riverdale and Dolton banks and the Dolton Riverdale Building and Loan office will be closed all day on Good Friday April 3. Governor Green has designated the day a legal holiday.

Sugar Ration Registration Dates Announced by OPA

The OPA sets commercial registrations for April 28 and 29 at high schools and household registrations May 4 to 7 at public grade schools. Each applicant receives a ration book, 28 stamps per book, valid nationwide. Entries require detailed personal data for every family member and certification of truth.

Obituary of John Verhoeven, 75, dies in South Holland

John Verhoeven aged 75 died Tuesday March 24 at Miller's Rest Home in South Holland from a cerebral hemorrhage. Born July 5, 1866 in Riverdale, he was a former Pullman Car Works blacksmith. Funeral services were held at Cooney Funeral Home and Holy Rosary Church with interment in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. He is survived by a sister Minnie and brothers Theodore William August and Emil.
