It traces his rough path to becoming Lincoln County Sheriff in 1880, his pursuit and killing of Billy the Kid, later roles with Texas Rangers and Dona Ana County Sheriff, a 1901 customs post under Roosevelt, and his decline into hardship before his 1908 murder.
