Americas High School defeated Rio Rancho 33 21 at Rio Rancho Stadium Friday night extending their 14 game streak. Americas built a 19 0 lead and held on despite Rams late drive before a drizzle soaked game. Coach Howes cited turnovers and errors as the difference. The Rams host La Cueva next Friday at 7 p m.

Former Rams standouts Williams and Newsome win Athlete of the Month

Former Rams athletes Chris Williams and Chris Newsome were honored as Athlete of the Month by the Rio Rancho Sports Advisory Council. Williams, in his fifth Ottawa Redblacks game, had seven receptions for 162 yards and an 84-yard TD in a July 27 overtime win. Newsome, a 2008 AAHS graduate and 2007 state champ, was drafted sixth overall by Meralco Bolts in the Aug 23 Gatorade PBA draft after playing for Ateneo in the Philippines.

APS Metro Volleyball Championships Set With 16 Teams

APS Athletics announced the eighth annual Metro Volleyball Championships presented by Ultimate Team Sales and Zia Graphics. Pool play Wednesday at La Cueva Sandia Eldorado and Cibola to set brackets with Friday and Saturday playoff at Volcano Vista. 16 team field includes Albuquerque Academy Cleveland Rio Rancho plus 13 APS programs.

Grapplefest Returns to Cleveland High With Various Registration Dates

Grapplefest 22 opens registrations with early online cutoff October 1 at 5 p.m. costing 40 or 60 dollars for one or two divisions. Late online deadline October 8 at 5 p.m. costs 50 or 70 dollars. New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame seeks 7 to 9 inductees

Fifty candidates remain in contention for the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame, with a seven to nine person class chosen at the banquet after by law changes. Public voting runs through September 30, with two votes allowed per person at rmshot.com and on the hall’s Facebook page where a photo can be liked to count as a vote. The candidate with the most votes enters the finalists pool for board review on October 15, leading to a November 22 board decision and a December 19 inductee ceremony. The Albuquerque Isotopes posted 14,299 in attendance on Saturday and 12,631 on Sunday, finishing the season with 560,519 total and an average of 8,007 over 70 games.

Storm roll past Conquistadores 52 36 at Del Valle HS

Cleveland Storm improves to 2-0 after a road win over Del Valle 52-36. Landry Hayes rushes for 111 yards and Gabe Ortega adds 178 passing yards along with a 73-yard TD run and a second touchdown pass to Marcus Williams. Del Valle drops to 1-1 as Anthony Lopez scores on a 26-yard run and Jason Morales returns a kickoff for 94 yards.

In a silver bracket semifinal, the Rio Rancho and Cleveland high schools tied through two overtime periods and a sudden-death round before Cleveland’s Abbi Rael misfired and Albuquerque’s Kellogg stopped the shot, sending the Rams to the Metro final.
