The City of Rio Rancho will close all offices and facilities on Monday for Labor Day except the Haynes Community Center pool. The pool at 2006 Grande Blvd will operate noon to 6 p.m. For details, visit rrnm.gov.
Applications are being taken for the Sandoval County Master Gardener Training Program 2016. The 16 week course runs Tuesdays 1 to 5 pm from Jan 12 to April 26 at the Sandoval County Extension Office. Deadline to apply is Dec 11 with 125 dollar fee and 40 hours class plus 30 hours volunteer work required. First priority to Sandoval residents. Contact 867-2582 or sandovalmastergardeners.org. Three Rio Rancho firefighters joined by Albuquerque firefighter assisted in the Fork Complex fires near Redding California Aug 5 22. Capt Kevin Canfield and FFs Chris Mandeville and Adam Gonzales worked 14 days with four days travel in a mission described as hard work and a dream come true for fighting fires in California.
Carey Moots, Rio Rancho's freelance photographer, returned from covering Pacific Northwest wildfires for NBC News. He filmed the Gold King Mine contaminant spill near Silverton, Colorado, then moved to Washington for seven to eight days of daily NBC pieces with former KOB reporter Gadi Schwartz.
Cohen Mangin, 2009 AAHS graduate and Rio Rancho High School Rams QB, now works as a corrections officer at the Penitentiary of New Mexico. He appears on A E Network’s Behind Bars Rookie Year, which follows new correctional officers at the state prison as they encounter dangerous inmates. The series premiered August 6 and airs new episodes Thursdays at 8 PM and repeats Sundays at 9 PM.
Michael White, executive chef and owner, plans a fine dining opening at The Point Grill in the Mariposa office building at 2500 Parkway Ave. The restaurant aims to offer lunch and dinner on weekdays and brunch on Sundays, with hours 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday initially, then expanding to a full weekly schedule. The site features mountain views of Albuquerque and surrounding lights.
