Students learn police work at Bernalillo High School
About 24 Sandoval County youths in grades 10 to 12 join the Scholastic Citizens' Police Academy a nine week pilot program run by SCCOPE. Deputy Darrel Sanchez says officers teach daily changing topics with FBI DEA and U S Customs involvement. The program aims to build civics and safety awareness while guiding some students toward law enforcement careers. It grows from a 1997 federal grant of 500000 and includes Sheriff’s Department Rio Rancho Public Safety Bernalillo and Corrales police.
