Murder and rape rise in Bernalillo County suburbs

Crime reports show rising violent offenses in Albuquerque area suburbs, with eight months of 1972 recording 11 murders in Bernalillo County and 41 homicides by August 1974. Forcible rape climbed from 123 in 1972 to 130 in the current year, while burglaries and thefts declined. Sheriff Lester Hay cites enhanced patrols and grants as cutting crime by 13 percent this August and notes local officers’ familiarity with the area as key to enforcement.
