When love kills and domestic violence counts rise
Disagreements occur in relationships but violence is harmful. October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Jacque Haisch of the Women's Community Association in Sandoval County notes that increases in reports may reflect awareness rather than a spike, with factors like substance abuse and poverty contributing. The association provides a 24 hour crisis line, transportation to shelters, counseling, support groups and legal advocacy. The group saw 225 adults served and 305 crisis encounters in 1993 94. Rio Rancho DPS formed DART to address domestic violence and child abuse with several officers. Through mid 1994 there were 235 reported domestics, suggesting a potential rise over last year.
