IRS seeks advisory council applicants for 2016

The Internal Revenue Service invites applications for the Internal Revenue Service Advisory Council IRSAC with up to five appointments to begin in January 2016. The council is a 35 member public forum for IRS officials and stakeholders to discuss tax administration issues. Applications are due by June 26 and may be submitted by individuals or organizations.

Rio Rancho officer shot near library in fatality

Rio Rancho police officer Gregg Benner was killed after a traffic stop near Esther Bone Memorial Library on Southern Boulevard and Pinetree Road. The suspect, Andrew Romero, 28, fled but was captured in Albuquerque around 4 a.m. Tuesday. Benner, 49, served with AAPD since 2011 after 20 years in the Air Force.

Memorial Day Parade Honors Rio Rancho Veterans

Rio Rancho observes Memorial Day with a 29-entry parade along Southern Boulevard. Mayor Gregg Hull and grandchildren Bryce and Madelyn joined, marching with dog Baxter while Rio Rancho Combat Veterans rode on a float. The procession ended at the Veterans Monument Park with remarks by dignitaries and veterans.

City fire station reopens after remodeling

Rio Rancho Fire Rescue Station 1 finishes a months long renovation of its three-decade old building on Southern Boulevard. Firefighters previously lived in cramped quarters with a makeshift kitchen doubling as a bedroom while crews worked to complete the 19000 square foot upgrade. Fire inspector Jessica Duran says the live in station design marks a change from the original HQ layout.

Former teacher sues ARPS over firing

Former Eagle Ridge Middle School teacher Lisa Christopherson files a federal whistleblower suit in Albuquerque alleging retaliation for criticizing Rio Rancho Public Schools officials and union involvement. The district cites a demeaning classroom conduct leading to her August 2012 dismissal. The suit names Superintendent Sue Cleveland, HR chief Sue Passell, and Principal Sarah Poutsch, claiming civil rights and Whistleblower protections were violated after a February 2010 board meeting about class sizes and mold concerns.
