Joel Sherman’s coaching life links to Lyle Alzado and Rio Rancho
Joel Sherman, longtime Rio Rancho figure, coached at Pefiasco High and served on the Rio Rancho Public Schools Board from 1999 to 2003. He roomed with late NFL star Lyle Alzado at Yankton College, recalling their bond, boxing chats, and steroid-era anecdotes. He battled heart disease after a 95 percent artery blockage, shifted to volunteer coaching, and today cherishes community ties and a nearby trout stream.
