Matachines keep 323 year old Bernalillo promise
In Bernalillo every Sunday evening Matachines rehearse in filas for the Feast of San Lorenzo on Aug 10, marking 323 years since Don Diego de Vargas promised to honor the saint. The group, led by monarcas Gilbert Sanchez and Edward Torres, preserves a long Nuevo Mexicano ritual with nine dances telling Montezuma’s conversion, while raising funds to restore the Santuario de San Lorenzo.
