The Rio Rancho Observer will close Friday in observance of Independence Day and reopen for regular hours from Monday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with business resuming on the next workday.
City of Rio Rancho will close City Hall libraries senior center indoor pool recycling center and other facilities Friday and Saturday for the Independence Day holiday. Outdoor pools will operate noon to 6 pm or 7 pm with admission 4 for adults and 3 for children 2 to 12 and seniors 55 plus. Police will run DWI checkpoints and saturation patrols throughout July along with Corrales enforcement and a DWI Super Blitz.
Gov Susana Martinez announced 2014 as a record year for tourism in New Mexico with 32.7 million visitors, up 0.5 million from 2013. The New Mexico True campaign helped lift marketable overnight trips by 40.6 percent since 2010, supporting job growth and a rise in both day and overnight trips.
More than 100 people gathered beside the Regional Public Safety Monument to honor murdered Rio Rancho Police Officer Gregg Nigel Benner and the Rio Rancho Police Department. Speakers including Ted Nugent urged justice system changes while widow Julie Benner joined a state attorney general task force. attendees hugged officers after the ceremony.
A Sandoval County jury found Amanda Jo Lucero not guilty of first-degree murder in the December 2013 Rio Rancho shooting of Andrew Anderson. Prosecutors argued premeditation. defense said Lucero acted to protect herself and Emily Lucero as Anderson menaced them with rocks and scissors.
Rio Rancho raises water and wastewater charges by 7.8 percent starting today as part of a five year plan. The fourth hike since January 2013 raises residential tier rates from 4.58 to 4.94 per 1000 gallons for 1st 6000 gallons, 4.96 to 5.35 for 7000-10000 gallons, and 5.35 to 5.76 for above 10000. Commercial water goes 4.85 to 5.23 per 1000 gallons, wastewater climbs to 9.65 from 8.95 per 1000 gallons for all users.
Gary Tripp is back with Rio Rancho Public Schools as district strategic planning and engagement officer. A 1979 West Las Vegas High School graduate, he later led the New Mexico Activities Association as its fifth executive director. He previously headed Rio Rancho High School 2001 to 2004 and T'siya Day School at Zia Pueblo before joining NMAA.
Rio Rancho High School art students from the ARTichokes club, guided by art teacher Matthew Lutz, partnered with Wood Realty to create and install two temporary murals on the west side of the NM 528 intersection with Sundt and Iris roads. The artworks, showcased publicly and involving business leaders, are hosted on commercial properties listed for sale by West Wood Realty.
