The New Mexico Department of Health reports a human plague case in a 43 year old woman living west of Rio Rancho in Sandoval County. The patient Debra Welsh fell ill January 21 and is hospitalized and expected to fully recover. Authorities investigate the infection source while noting fleas around homes drive most cases.
Duane Sonier of Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful announces the end of phone book recycling this weekend. Roll-off bins remain at Rio Rancho Farr's on Southern Boulevard and in Enchanted Hills on NM 828. Bins will be picked up Monday.
Rio Rancho Public Schools voters will decide next Tuesday on a 32.5 million bond and a 2 mill levy in separate ballots. The bond funds include a 23 million middle/high school academy to ease overcrowding, an Enchanted Hills elementary, athletic facilities, and districtwide upgrades. The 2 mill levy covers building maintenance and minor repairs, including HVAC and air conditioning.
Campaign signs for and against the Rio Rancho Public School bond and mill levy have been disappearing around the city. Don Lemm says about 6 of 20 'vote no' signs remain, blaming "small minded" groups while proponents report vanishing signs ahead of next Tuesday's ARPS election.
Lincoln Middle School hosted CARRE Corrections Awareness to alert eighth graders about criminal activity. Six Bernalillo County Detention Center reps and Victory Outreach members spoke with ex criminals now in reform. Organizer Eloy Nunez said the program aims to prevent drug abuse and crime. Joe Williams shared a Bible based message from his gang and prison past.
A Rio Rancho resident filed a recall petition against City Councilors Jack Thomas and Joan Kellogg accusing them of ignoring constituents in the TVI tax decision. Don Lemm has 60 days to collect signatures for a potential special recall election. Councilor Felicie Truscio proposed a resolution urging state action to remove Rio Rancho from TVI's taxing district, citing uneven tax impact south of Northern Boulevard.
