The final public forum for Rio Rancho Public Schools district bond election will be held Thursday in the Rio Rancho High School cafeteria. District officials will explain the two ballot questions and their impact on the city. Polls open 7 am to 7 pm on Feb. 1.
Sandoval County Historical Society presents Dr. Stanley Hordes, former state historian, for a free slide show on the Crypto Jewish history in Spain Portugal and their 14th 15th century forced conversions and migrations to the New World. Opponents argued the proposed utility impact fee could hinder growth and strain finances during a three hour Rio Rancho work session. The council asked the Utilities Commission to review again and the plan may return for final consideration next month.
Corrales resident Randolph Vivar has been indicted by a Sandoval County Grand Jury on five counts of criminal sexual contact of a child and one count of criminal sexual penetration of a child. The arraignment is set for February 7 at the Sandoval County Courthouse before Judge Kenneth G. Brown.
Yasa Development withdraws appeal of a Rio Rancho Planning and Zoning rejection and negotiates changes with neighbors. The 33 acre Los Caballeros subdivision near NM 448 Rio Vista Drive will be revised and returned to the planning commission for approval.
Rio Rancho Public Schools district seeks charter district status approved unanimously by the New Mexico Board of Education. Superintendent Dr. Sue Cleveland says the move grants autonomy while preserving accountability and public scrutiny. A voter approval is required before July to implement for the 2001 school year, with performance based budgeting guiding funding to the classroom.
Rio Rancho school board recognized Raquel Hernandez a Casinas del Norte Elementary fourth grader as a finalist in the Landmark Publications annual Written and Illustrated Book Contest. Several Colinas students were honored for book reviews in New Mexico Kids Magazine with Hernandez among 100 finalists chosen from 730 entrants.
